@MattTucker1776 Nobody is “mad”. It’s just ridiculous that Trump’s policies are directly benefiting the worst regimes in the world. He’s literally a boon to dictators and oligarchs.
@XiXiDu Glossing over the fact that the AI companies are using their own “innate privilege” to make sure that nobody else is ever allowed to benefit from another innate privilege.
@arvidkahl Because nobody cares until their own job is gone? And the AI companies don’t even have the profits to fund UBI; let alone being willing to do it, assuming that the profits are there.
@ConstantinKogl@OpenAI That seems to be correct. They are always one generation ahead (plus huge amounts of compute). The 10 problems they released in the summer were done with Astra, and probably doable with what is publicly available now.
@tdietterich@seth_stafford Did you just call the Quasi-Riemann hypothesis a low hanging fruit?
The number and difficulty of solved problems has been increasing exponentially for the last few years, so I don’t think your extrapolation is very likely. ☹️
@normonics Math takes a huge amount of time to do just for the joy of it. (Unless you are already a billionaire - but those very rarely find the motivation, either.)
@eigenrobot It’s not that the current generation will immediately lose their jobs. The question is, who will sign up to be the next generation if the job becomes a never-ending pile of papers to review. We need to find a challenge and a purpose for the next generation to stay involved.
@DimitrisPapail It is a good time if you are an applied scientist who is using math towards another goal. It is not a good time if solving math problems is your special skill, because the value of that has dropped close to 0.
@tziporarosie Then you didn’t think through what you’re actually saying…
High universal income would require a mechanism to redistribute the extreme profits that would presumably flow into the pockets of AI companies. I.e. communism in action. Are you actually promoting this?
@airkatakana Tell me this - when in history has somebody with infinite leverage over others willingly distribute their riches among everybody else?
We know it doesn’t work, attempts to implement communism never worked, and yet we are supposed to believe that this time will be different.
@palehonk Yeah you can “use the models in different ways”. But the primary way of using them that their creators envisioned, that is exactly what makes you lazy and stupid. Or do you really believe everybody will ask AI and then also do the work on the side just for practice??
@ziv_ravid I’m not sure that art and culture will be last. It depends on what you declare to be “art” vs. “slop” but in terms of hurting artists economically, it’s already there - commercially acceptable music and design art can be generated now easily.
@NateSilver538 The utopia as envisioned by the labs strikes me as naive, and I wonder if economists should comment on this. Assuming that AI takes over most of the economy, never in history has somebody with infinite leverage behaved magnanimously and shared their riches with everybody else.
@LuizaJarovsky Silicon Valley folks will also find post-scarcity unbearable, when they actually have to face it. They’re too busy to think it through seriously.
