(5/6) IIT Kanpur has consistently been placed among the top five technological institutions in the country. If excellence is understood only through outputs and rankings, it risks overlooking the cost at which these outcomes are produced.

When an institution representing less than a tenth of the system accounts for a quarter of its student deaths, it raises urgent questions about whether these are isolated tragedies or signs of deeper systemic issues.

The NIRF 2024 rankings assessed institutions across 16 categories, focusing on teaching, research, employability, and infrastructure. IIT Kanpur participated in five categories—Overall, Engineering, Research, Innovation, and Management—securing 4th in Engineering, 5th Overall

and 7th in Research. However, it saw a drop in Innovation from 1st in 2023 to 5th in 2024, while its evolving Management program ranked 29th.
