In Mahabharata (Karna Parva, Section 41), there is a famous parable told to illustrate hollow bravado & shifting allegiances:

A crow lived near a wealthy merchant’s family by the ocean & grew fat & arrogant on the leftover scraps the children fed him every day. 1 day, magnificent swans arrived, birds equal to Garuda in strength & range of flight. The children jokingly told the crow he was greater than them all.

Believing it, the crow challenged the lead swan to a flying contest. “I know a 101 different flying tricks!” the crow boasted. “Rising, diving, spinning, darting...watch me!”

The swan calmly replied, “I know only 1 simple way of flying, the way all birds know. You may use whatever tricks you like.”

They took off. Near land the crow showed off its elaborate maneuvers & seemed impressive for a while. But as they flew far out over the open ocean, with no shore/resting place in sight, the crow’s wings grew exhausted. It began to sink toward the waves, panic-stricken.

Desperate, it cried out for mercy. The swan picked the crow up, carried it safely back to shore & left. The crow finally admitted: “Fed on others’ leftovers, I foolishly thought myself equal to Garuda.”

A deep appeal to the students: The street protests have become that same open ocean & the political agitators, camera-wielding influencers & opportunistic agencies are the ones throwing you the "leftover scraps" of viral attention, likes & fake validation.

They convince you that you are invincible, that your anger makes you Garuda & that you are leading a revolution. They encourage you to show off your "101 tricks", the clever placards, the theatrical chants, the viral reels, the face-offs with authority.

Then comes the open ocean.

When the political circus moves to the next trend, the cameras pack up & the state machinery rolls out actual legal consequences, those agitators fly away. They have legal retainers, political immunity & 0 skin in the game.

You are left alone over the deep water.🙏🙏

We are watching synthetic media transition from a technological novelty into an active instrument of psychological warfare. Deepfakes are being deployed left, right & center as digital weapons during public unrest to manipulate public perception, manufacture rage & destroy reputations in real time.

What makes this dangerous is the institutional dynamic across major social platforms. When a deepfake spreads across messaging & social networks, the default response from major platforms is often inaction/bureaucratic deflection:

Meta (Instagram & WhatsApp): B/w automated algorithms that consistently misflag benign content while letting viral outrage cycle uninterrupted & end-to-end messaging pipelines where manipulated media circulates freely, there is little expectation of active, structural intervention. I have not much hope from Meta anyway, because it has been hijacked long ago by leftists.

Telegram: Designed with minimal moderation architecture, it has naturally evolved into an unvetted pipeline for unverified content, financial scams & coordinated smear campaigns. So, no hope from TG as well...

This leaves X. Under new leadership, the platform positioned itself as a defender of absolute free speech & truth through crowd-verification. Yet, when it comes to pre-emptively containing synthetic media/enforcing strict origin-verification, the friction remains:

Why has not the platform deployed a strict, zero-tolerance verification framework for AI-generated media before it achieves viral distribution? cc: @nikitabier

Technically & logically, the solution is not complex:

- Requiring any media generated/edited via integrated AI engines like Grok/third-party APIs to carry immutable cryptographic provenance tags.

- The moment a verified deepfake is flagged by crowd-verification engines like Community Notes, its digital fingerprint should be instantaneously blacklisted from being re-uploaded across the network.

- If an unverified video shows a sensitive event w/o clear metadata/verification, its algorithmic reach should automatically be restricted until verified.

Free speech was never meant to shield synthetic deception designed to incite violence/mislead millions.

When platforms fail to draw a sharp, logical line b/w human expression & algorithmic impersonation, they accelerate the erosion of public trust itself.

It is time for platforms that claim to champion truth to actually implement the technical safeguards to enforce it.

Over the past many years, I have taken a personal stand in support of the NEET examination, arguing that it brought uniformity in student selection across the country and gave students from underprivileged backgrounds a real shot at pursuing their dream of medical education. In the last 5 years, the NEET UG question paper has leaked thrice. Imagine the amount of pressure that it puts on students, who had to go through the examination process yet another time when the system that was supposed to bring in uniformity was failing. Yet there was no accountability, and I believe strongly that it was that moment that brought in a shift in the minds of the students to take to the streets to cry their hearts out.

Protest is a fundamental right in a Democracy. The pertinent question, however, is this: why did the BJP-led Central Government take so long to initiate a dialogue with the protestors? Why was meaningful engagement delayed until the protest had escalated to a flashpoint? What kept you waiting?

The students and the people who are leading them also have a responsibility here. It is natural that when a protest stays on for weeks, people with vested interests will take the stage to air views that are either completely irrelevant to the initial demands of the protests or would try to completely hijack it to serve their agenda. If you remain silent and let these people with vested interests further their agenda, then you are deviating from your core objectives. Please do not let it happen!

I urge the BJP-led Central Government to engage in meaningful dialogue, uphold transparency, and take swift, appropriate action to address the concerns at hand. The strength of any nation lies in the confidence its youth place in its institutions. If our students lose faith in the fairness and credibility of our education system, we are jeopardising the future of our nation.
