தமிழ்நாடு சட்டப்பேரவைத் தேர்தலையொட்டி சிவகங்கையில் இன்று நடைபெற்ற @NewsTamilTV24x7 தொலைக்காட்சியின் தேர்தல் பயணம் என்ற தலைப்பிலான விவாத நிகழ்ச்சியில் திமுக அரசின் தோல்விகள் குறித்து வினா எழுப்பியதற்காக திமுக ரவுடிகள் நடத்தியத் தாக்குதலில் அந்த நிகழ்ச்சியை நடத்திய செய்தியாளர் இராஜேஷ், மாவட்ட செய்தியாளர் சதாம் ஆகியோர் படுகாயம் அடைந்து மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர். அதிமுகவைச் சேர்ந்த இலை கடை லட்சுமணன், நாம் தமிழர் கட்சியை சேர்ந்த இளங்கோவன் ஆகியோரும் படுகாயம் அடைந்துள்ளனர். திமுகவினரின் இந்த காட்டுமிராண்டித் தனமான தாக்குதல் கண்டிக்கத்தக்கது.

திமுகவுக்கு எப்போதெல்லாம் தோல்வி பயம் ஏற்படுகிறதோ, அப்போதெல்லாம் இத்தகைய வன்முறையை திமுக கையிலெடுக்கும் என்பதற்கு வரலாறு நெடுகிலும் ஆதாரங்கள் நிறைந்திருக்கின்றன. எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் வளர்ச்சியைப் பொறுக்க முடியாமல் சட்டப்பேரவைக்கு உள்ளேயும், வெளியேயும் திமுக தாக்குதல்களை நடத்தியது; அடுத்து வந்த தேர்தலில் திமுக படுதோல்வி அடைந்தது.

I feel a profound sense of pride and emotional fulfillment after watching the Marathi film Asha, which powerfully portrays the life and service of an ASHA health worker. I was moved to tears seeing a full-length feature film based on an initiative that began as a public health mission during my tenure as the Union Health Minister of India.
The ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) initiative was conceived and launched under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) on April 12, 2005, as the world’s largest public health programme. It was built on a clear political vision — to democratize healthcare, decentralize service delivery, and empower rural women as the backbone of India’s public health system. It was not merely a scheme; it was a social revolution in rural healthcare.
When we initiated this mission, the challenges were enormous. Rural India faced high maternal and infant mortality rates, limited access to institutional deliveries, and inadequate awareness of preventive healthcare. Over the past two decades, India has witnessed a historic transformation, with the maternal mortality rate reduced by nearly 60% and the infant mortality rate reduced by nearly 80%. These are not mere statistics; they represent lakhs of saved mothers and children, and stronger families across rural India.
Today, there are more than 10 lakh ASHAs working tirelessly across the country. They serve as the first point of contact between our healthcare system and rural communities. They are trusted companions for pregnant women, guardians of newborn health, facilitators of immunisation, and champions of nutrition and sanitation awareness.
The global community has also recognised their extraordinary contribution. In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) conferred the Global Health Leaders Award on India’s ASHA workforce, recognising their outstanding service in advancing public health, strengthening community outreach, and playing a critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ASHA workers have become the face of grassroots governance. They are the bridge between the government and the people. They embody the spirit of inclusive development and women-led empowerment.
Watching this transformative journey portrayed on screen was not just emotional , it was deeply personal. I vividly remember the long hours we spent over several months, conceptualising this mission, refining every detail, within the walls of Nirman Bhavan, New Delhi. I wholeheartedly congratulate the writer, director, producer, and the entire cast and crew of the film Asha, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, for bringing national attention to the silent warriors of our healthcare system. This film is a tribute to India’s grassroots democracy in action.
Let this film remind us that visionary public policy, backed by political will and sustained commitment, can truly change the destiny of a nation.
