What’s bothered me about the Digger discourse is that the haters keep moving the goalposts. It’s gone from “it’s bad satire” to “ok, it’s actually an exploration of satire, but it’s a bad exploration!” to “ok, even if the film works, Iñárritu’s ego is annoying.” You can’t win.
So many movies talking about the end of the world: OBAA, Eddington, now Digger. It’s all just bread and circus right? The movie ends and we go home to our comfy little bubbles happy we caught one more showing before the Titanic finally sinks. This isn’t admonishment. It just is.
