"Unfortunately, in many schools today, especially in high-poverty schools, computers are often used mainly for test preparation, reading and math drill and practice for students, and for administrative uses such as recording attendance or grades." #EDL_655
@MarkBrickley I've been wondering the same thing. The example given is High Tech High. I am not sure how teaching students through that approach in K-3 would look like, since it is when students are learning foundational skills. Perhaps one could incorporate segments to prepare them. #EDL_655
In Reinventing Education for the 21st Century, critical thinking and problem solving are the first survival skill. Tony Wagner mentions that there is no set definition for it, which made me wonder what is critical thinking? What is your definition of critical thinking? #EDL_655
Collaboration is a 21st century skill, which should be practiced by students, yet as the Ted Talk- Why Collaboration is an Individual Effort states“... it shouldn’t be assumed that it is a natural inclination for everyone.” #EDL_655
@JJ_Kotlarz I have the same question, since I’m sure we have all come across a student who prefers to work independently. The first thing I would do is ask why. Then I would go from there. I would also monitor the student and provide assistance as a mediator within the group. #EDL_655
The Garden in My Apartment video shows a valuable lesson. It shows the power of collaboration, and how working with others may bring new insights and better results. How can we teach our students the power of collaboration? #EDL_655
"As the curriculum becomes more complex, learners become more dependent on being told what to do." Scaffolding and gradually releasing students to work independently is very important for this reason. #EDL_655
@zhongyingyi2013 That is a good question. I think that the teacher will need permission slips such as a media release form, which if parents sign allows the district to use, but I don't think it becomes the district's property. #EDL_655
One take of away of the readings was the impact of a portfolio. A goal for this summer is to learn different tools I can use to introduce student portfolios into my class. Through a portfolio we will "focus on the end in mind and track progress toward our destination."#EDL_655
@Carolin66345489 Hello Caroline,
I use the Common Sense Education. They have lessons based on grade level. The lessons include the different aspects of digital citizenship, which includes cyber bulling and keeping their personal information safe. https://t.co/cYc5tWob3T #EDL_655
@thebadler In an outdoor education program I worked for, we had a question jar. Each student would select a question and would be given time to think. They would sometimes volunteer to share. Depending on time we had them write it in a journal. #EDL_655
“Students need consistent experience in all three lesson plans... often enough for them to feel the occasional misery, frequent messiness, and rewarding magic of developing an investigation or idea.” #Students_at_the_Center#EDL_655
As I was reading about individualized learning, I wondered if it would work with the lower grades. How can students decide or have a say on what to learn if they don’t have the foundational skills? I found some ideas in ch.3, but what do you think? #EDL_655
As I was reading the book Students at the Center Personalized Learning with Habits of Mind, I read the following quote, “teaching for thinking is as important as teaching content knowledge." This quote made me wonder, what is one thing you do to teach thinking? #EDL_655
@nellie_tate Hi Nellie,
Exercise at times does seem like a luxury. I try to work out at least 3 times a week, which is really difficult. Nevertheless, I have found that my time at the gym helps me relax and feel better, so don't give up on exercise. #EDL_655
