Solving the mystery of the 4.9m. It appears there are 14.04m registered taxpayers. 6.6m are under the R75k threshold. 2.5m do not have to submit returns - under R150k. They contribute approx 3% of the R463bn personal income tax (PIT) - R15bn tops. So the 4.9m make up 97% of PIT.
1. Make it easy to run a business (red tape)
2. Make it possible to run a business (infrastructure)
3. Make it safe to run a business (fix SAPS/NPA)
4. Make it practical to run a business (rein in unions)
5. Equip people for work (fix education)
6. Don't expropriate property
Half our taxes go to paying the government wage bill. Not much left for grants; medicine; books; dams; roads; sewage; hospitals; houses; land; food parcels; insurance etc.
Kudos to @Clicks_SA for the decision to provide funded basic medical cover to over 9k Clicks staff. An excellent move. Total annualized cost is R31m (on operating profit of R1,8bn). More corporates should do this....esp when you consider that R31m < some CEOโs earn in a year!
