If you subtract national debt increases from GDP. The UK economy has actually shrunk 2% per year since 2008. In other words the UK economy has shrunk 30% since 2008. This is historic underperformance!
@alexwickham Yes the 25 year gilt is already at 6.05%. UK annual debt interest is already up £20b since Burnham came to power. For context they said a wealth tax would raise £10b-£20b so that doesn’t even pay the increase in interest from the past 2 months!
@SaulStaniforth It’s the old drowned witch analogy. If someone complains about tax but doesn’t leave the country then taxes can’t be that bad. If they do leave the country then we shouldn’t listen to them because they are greedy and unpatriotic
@mdjcole The answer is Gordon Brown fixed the financial system so that another crisis was less likely to happen by over regulating the very industry that was growing the economy. He cooked the goose that laid the golden egg
The 25 year gilt is currently at 5.9% with the big bonus that the capital gain is tax free so get one with a low cupón. Interestingly the 100 year Alphabet bond in GBP only gives 6.9% and with no tax advantages so market thinks Google is more solvent over 100 years than UK government is over 25
@blaiklockBP You would probably get better people if MPs were paid no salary at all. GBP1m per year would incentivise career politicians and all kinds of lies. Maybe only pay them for improved outcomes
@joehas In Spain payroll taxes are high and Labour rules are strict. Companies cannot risk to pay high salaries because they cannot ever reverse the decision in bad times.
The selfish gene and extended phenotype are two of the most important scientific ideas of the last 50 years. The books are difficult for anyone without a good knowledge of genetics and so yes he also has ten other books saying similar things but in less technical language. Dawkins one of the most important thinkers alive
@StephenFleming@SpaceX Yes I think we are 20 years out from having governing corporate states. Either explicitly eg Spacexland or Amazonland or puppet states that are 90% funded by corporates. If AI really takes of they will simply take over the nation debt in exchange for power over all policy
@fryktligefrank@skdh Minimise suffering definitely should not be the goal. That means the perfect solution would be instantaneous painless death to everyone.
Nazism was a branch of socialism. And different branches of socialism have a history of trying to wipe each other out. Look at the Soviet backed Republicans in the Spanish civil war who said that the other socialist groups fighting on their side were the real fascists and so started to murder them or the Trotskiests vs the Stalinists. Franco was a socialist too in that he beloved in the power of the Collective Spanish people united by their love of God. None of these people beloved in the freedom of markets or individual decision making and would murder anyone at all for the good of the collective
@ArthurMacwaters A person who has grown up as a social elite - expensive private school, Oxford to running The Economist belittling someone who is daring to challenge the narrative of her elitist circle “you realise everyone loathes you right? You should act popular like me”
