CBC management would do the corporation and the country a service by announcing right now that the public broadcaster will not compete with commercial media for Bill C18 Google funding, making clear they undertand what a PSB actually is.
For the CBC to participate in the Bill C18 Google fund would be to repeat the foundational error of allowing commercial sponsorship on the public broadcaster. A PSB should be funded by the public it serves, and not corporate commercial interests.
The CBC should most definitely NOT be a beneficiary of the Bill C18 Google fund. It should instead get our of commercial sponsorship on all platforms. A PSB exists to serve the public, and should be financed by the public out of general tax revenue like other public services.
Congratulations to @naomiAklein on the roaring success of her latest book, Doppelganger: A Trip Into the Mirror World. The review in the NYT Review of Books concludes, "If I had to name a single book that makes sense of these last few dark years, it would be this one." Wow!
