We are not going to get ICE off our streets or protect Home Rule by fearing this President.
Threatening DC because you do not like how our residents vote is an attack on democracy itself.
The people of DC elect the Mayor of DC. And they want someone who will stand up to Trump.
There’s a great term for this phenomenon: fiscal donut. And DC would be at risk of becoming more of one if its tax base leaves for suburbs. See, eg, Bridgeport, CT. DC would be better served by trying to retain and grow its tax base.
Mayor Bowser was at The Post today for an event where she was interviewed by executive editor Matt Murray, who leads the newsroom. He asked her about the mayoral race. She did not want to weigh in on whether she would endorse, but here's what she said (thread)
it's a poem about a thing that never happened, credited to an author who probably never existed, and helen is introduced within the mythology as the daughter of ZEUS, a figure literally nobody in this country even believes in, if you're emotionally invested in the historicity of her pigmentation you need a life and also medication, not necessarily in that order
I can’t overstate how valuable @mattyglesias and @AshleySchapitl have been as rational Democratic voices leading up to the DC mayoral and council elections. The stakes are very high this cycle.
Education has gotten too little attention in the mayoral conversation, but does anyone think DCPS parents support policies that:
1. Cut instructional days
2. Threaten progress DCPS has made to improve reading and math
3. End a system that pays good teachers bonuses
@ScottGoldstein@kenyanmcduffie The frustrating thing about this take is that it overlooks how sensitive the DC tax base is to tax and regulatory changes. It is very easy for residents to vote with their feet and move to VA or MD. There are easy ways DC could grow the tax base in a way that isn’t zero sum.
@aparnafordc@runforsomething The policy solution here is sitting right in front of everyone’s face. If you want to reduce DC rents and pay for more services, we need to dramatically increase the housing supply (and correspondingly the tax base).
Some people won’t love this, but Mamdani pivoting from wealth taxes to property taxes is a smart idea because “property” cannot leave the taxing jurisdiction, whereas wealthy people do: https://t.co/OQVIVLDM51
@rapoportmike@RyanAHogg@tax Michael, the NGO quotes in this article are killing me. Your third graf mentions taxes paid to China, Mexico and Canada and that is evidence of “offshore tax games” and “global tax dodgers”? Sheesh
@AshleySchapitl Related point: this insurance company (which one would assume has strong market incentives to accurately price risk) is offering a 50% discount for full self driving cars based on observed reductions in accident rates. https://t.co/k3wVeFfOFF
@kpomerleau Reminds me of a classic Machiavelli quote: “never do your enemy a small injury.” I.e., if you are going to cross someone, you have to be fully committed.
