I think raising taxes on 1/4 of District households in a deep local recession with no public discussion instead of proposing any real budget cuts, and while also proposing new spending is a terrible economic and fiscal path to go down.
Nadeau's proposal would give us the country's highest cap gains rate. Ca. gets away with 13% rate rate b/c it's the historical home of Silicon Valley, and it's a gorgeous place rich folks still want to live despite their complaining.
I don't think going higher would convince people to move out of DC. But I do worry it would further smash whatever tiny incentive there was to do a startup here instead of VA or Maryland...
#News - DC Council gives preliminary approval to broad legislation allowing any number of council members to meet in secret for any reason without advance public notice. Ward 6's Charles Allen voted no, but did get an amendment requiring public disclosure of such meetings after they occur. Law otherwise substantively guts open meeting law.
good example of why no matter who wins I think we're going to miss Mayor Bowser when she's gone. "the council, but moreso" is a daunting prospect
(we should tax gambling into oblivion though, even if it's a net $ loser. she's wrong about that)
ZERO public hearings on a new tax that will affect almost all DC residents. Shameful @councilofdc...especially for people like @CMCHenderson and @charlesallen who claim to want "good governance. What a joke.
"A new tax on any person or family selling their primary residence or earning rental income."
Sticking this tax in the budget with no public discussion or effort to find savings in a budget that has increased ~20% in real terms since the pandemic is bad policymaking.
