One of the most overlooked chokepoints in the visible laser supply chain sits inside a $30M USD market cap Australian micro-cap almost nobody outside specialist semiconductor research circles has heard of.
$BLG (ASX: BLG)
One of only a handful of end-to-end GaN laser diode manufacturers globally, with vertically integrated sovereign manufacturing across Australia and the United States. Trading as a perpetual R&D entity. It is not.
Silicon cannot emit light under electrical injection. Every platform requiring optical communication, quantum state manipulation, or high-precision sensing must rely on external compound semiconductor laser engines. As these platforms transition to the visible spectrum, mandatory for neutral atom quantum computing, submarine lidar, and biological profiling, stable high-power single-mode visible lasers have become an absolute physical constraint.
Traditional GaN production via MOCVD requires temperatures exceeding 1000°C, causing quantum well degradation, 50% electrical power waste as heat, and wafer bowing on silicon. BluGlass bypassed all three with RPCVD, enabling crystal growth at 600°C via a remote nitrogen plasma source decoupled from substrate temperature. This unlocks active-as-grown tunnel junctions eliminating the 50% waste heat problem, and substrate-agnostic strain management for direct silicon photonics integration. Neither breakthrough is replicable with MOCVD.
On May 19, 2026, BluGlass set a world record: 1.9W peak output from a single-spatial-mode 450nm blue GaN laser on a single monolithic chip, a 52% improvement over their previous world record. The MOCVD industry standard sits at 500mW to 1W.
Three chokepoints:
Neutral atom quantum computing requires visible lasers with extreme optical stability to trap and manipulate individual atoms at room temperature. Any frequency drift destroys quantum coherence. BluGlass already supplies Infleqtion, a global neutral atom quantum leader, and received an order from TOPTICA Photonics for custom GaN lasers for a quantum photonic integrated circuit foundry program targeting secure communications and GPS-denied navigation.
Sovereign defense: GaN visible laser production is concentrated almost exclusively in East Asia. BluGlass is one of only two GaN laser suppliers globally with U.S. manufacturing, a primary CLAWS Hub contractor under the U.S. Department of War’s Microelectronics Commons program with A$6.5M in cumulative contracts. A Tier-1 defense prime holds an active A$1.25M order. Indian Department of Defence approved supplier status secured. Fortune 500 data storage leader signed a A$1.3M collaboration in April 2026.
The operational inflection the market has missed:
In 2022, BluGlass acquired a Silicon Valley fab for US$2.5M against a US$40M to US$50M replacement cost. Wafer capacity quadrupled to 10,000 annually. Iterations dropped from months to three weeks, enabling 48 parallel development cycles per year versus 4 to 5 previously. At full capacity this fab represents US$170M in annual revenue. The company trades at US$25M.
Revenue grew from A$4.6M in FY24 to A$5.45M in FY25, with H1 FY26 already reaching A$5.76M in six months. Net loss narrowed 28% in H1 FY26. Entire legacy R&D board replaced by Executive Chair Omer Granit of EnPar Capital and CEO Jim Haden, 30 years transitioning deep-tech innovators into profitable manufacturers at Kyocera SLD, nLIGHT, Coherent, and JDS Uniphase.
The peer disconnect:
POET Technologies: US$2B market cap, US$503K quarterly revenue.
Weebit Nano: A$1.9B market cap, zero commercial revenue.
BluGlass: A$37M market cap, A$11.7M FY25 revenue, world-record GaN performance, sovereign manufacturing, 29 active pipeline projects valued at over US$100M.
A Silicon Valley fab acquired for US$2.5M capable of US$170M at capacity. A world-record laser platform. Sovereign manufacturing the Western defense complex cannot source from East Asia. Trading at $30 million.
The market has not found it yet.

@aleabitoreddit@MacnBTC $BLG. $30 MC. US defence contracts. quantum computing, defense, bio-medical, and AI/data storage. Recent 6 million capital placement. Unveiled next gen GAN chips. $100 mil commercial pipeline. 3 new patents in pipeline. Massive market. Only 30mill MC!
@PhotonCap there’s a major pure-play component gap here: BluGlass (ASX: $BLG). While you rightly point out that elite system integrators like TOPTICA are private, BluGlass is a listed semiconductor foundry specializing exclusively in Gallium Nitride (GaN) visible lasers (violet, blue, and -
@StarDestr0yer I'm impressed with the current $HTG developments. They are making sure the current bagholders have fresh new bagholders on the HotCopper threads, akin to buying another dog to keep the first one company
@KeithvdKraan $CBE had huge upside purely based on Ngami ISCR project, the additional acquisition in Chile makes it more compelling with two company making projects
@Larryjamieson_ I think yes. The perceived impact from AI displacing incumbents is overplayed. The opportunity is with the incumbent software names to leverage AI and shift the power
