We are not as safe from drones as many people think. But the real danger may not be what you expect.
In recent incidents in the National Capital Region, it took at least thirty minutes to determine whether an identified UAS was authorized. In some cases, it was never determined. In nearly every case where it was resolved, the drone was authorized. Had kinetic action been taken, the consequences could have been catastrophic.
This didn’t happen by accident.
We went into defense mode before we built a foundation of awareness and clarity. Instead of creating a cohesive system, we chased point solutions. Everyone pushed their own niche capability as the answer. Sensors, defeat systems, UTM platforms, and Remote ID. Each one trying to plug a hole in the dam with a finger.
The result is fragmentation, not an ecosystem. It’s easier to hide in a crowd, and that is exactly what our systems see today.
That is not airspace control. That is dangerous uncertainty.
The system to fix this already exists. It’s called ATOMx. It delivers trusted, machine-verifiable authorization before a drone takes off, monitors conformance to flight intent in real time, and notes deviations instantly.
This is the foundation that should have been implemented first. It can and must be fixed now.
