I reread this every year.
I cry like a baby every year.
Todd Beamer died a father, husband, and hero.
Todd: Hello… Operator… listen to me. I can’t speak very loud. This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco. Our plane has been hijacked.
Lisa: I understand. Can they see you?
Todd: No. There are three that we know of. They have knives — razor knives, like box cutters. Someone announced from the cockpit there was a bomb. It sounded fake.
Lisa: Your name?Todd: Todd Beamer. United Flight 93.Todd: They killed one passenger in first class. They forced most of us back. Fourteen of us here. Five flight attendants. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor.
Lisa: Are you okay?
Todd: We’re going down… wait. No. We’re leveling off. We changed directions. We’re flying east again.
Todd: A guy named Jeremy called his wife. She told him two planes hit the World Trade Center. Lisa, is that true?
Lisa: I have to tell you the truth. It’s very bad. Both towers are gone. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Our country is under attack. I’m afraid your plane may be part of their plan.
Todd: Oh God. Lisa, will you do something for me? Call my wife and my kids. Promise me you’ll call.
Lisa: I promise.
Todd: Our home number is… You have the same name as my wife. Lisa. We’ve been married ten years. She’s pregnant with our third child. Tell her I love her. I’ll always love her. We have two boys — David, he’s 3, and Andrew, he’s 1. Tell them their daddy loves them and he is so proud of them. The baby is due January 12th. I saw an ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy.
Lisa: I’ll tell them. I promise, Todd.(Lisa patches in the FBI.)
Agent: Todd, your plane is on a course for Washington. Best guess is the White House or the Capitol.
Todd: I understand. I’ll be back.
Todd: Everyone knows this isn’t a normal hijacking. We have decided we will not be pawns in their plot.
Lisa: What are you going to do?
Todd: Four of us are going to rush the one with the bomb. Then the cockpit. A stewardess is getting boiling water. We’ll take them out.
Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray the Lord’s Prayer. Then: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.
Todd: God help me. Jesus help me.Are you guys ready? Let’s Roll.
I find these World Trade Center simulations by Kostack Studio fascinating because they remove the smoke and let you see the collapse much more clearly.
In the real footage, so much is hidden by fire, dust, debris, distance, and chaos that many people come away with the impression that the towers simply dropped straight down into their own footprints.
But that is not really what happened.
These simulations make it much easier to see that the collapse begins in the heavily damaged and fire-weakened region, the upper section starts moving and tilting, and the destruction then propagates downward through the structure.
The towers do not simply disappear vertically into their own footprints. Large portions of the upper structure and exterior are moving outward and to the side as the collapse develops. Much of that motion is simply obscured in the real videos once the enormous debris cloud forms.
And this is also why I find these simulations useful when people describe the collapses as looking like “controlled demolition.”
Strip away the smoke and dust and the resemblance becomes much less convincing.
What you see is a highly asymmetric structural failure beginning around the aircraft-damaged and fire-affected floors, followed by an enormous moving mass progressively overwhelming the structure beneath it. There is tilting, rotation, exterior columns peeling away, debris being thrown far outside the building footprint, and structural failure occurring chaotically as the collapse moves downward.
That is very different from the neat mental image usually implied by “controlled demolition,” where structural supports are deliberately severed in a carefully timed sequence to produce a predetermined collapse.
And importantly, we already know what preceded these collapses.
Both towers suffered massive aircraft-impact damage. Fireproofing was stripped from portions of the structure. Large, uncontrolled fires then burned across multiple floors - for about 56 minutes in the South Tower and about 102 minutes in the North Tower - heating and weakening structural components until collapse initiated.
Once that upper mass began moving, the loads imposed on the floors and structure beneath became vastly greater than anything they had been designed to carry.
The result was progressive collapse.
No, an animation is not proof simply because it looks convincing, and these are not official NIST simulations. They are visualizations built under particular assumptions.
But as visualizations, I think they are extremely useful.
They let you see something the original footage often cannot show clearly: beneath that enormous cloud of smoke and debris was a complicated, violent, asymmetric structural failure - not two buildings neatly dropping straight down into their own footprints.
A note on the simulation: this is not intended to reproduce the collapse down to the exact motion of every beam, floor panel, and fragment of debris. No practical simulation could do that. Its value is in modeling the large-scale structural behavior - how the major sections deform, move, tilt, separate, and progressively fail. Think of it as a visualization of the mechanics and overall collapse behavior, not a frame-by-frame reconstruction of where every piece of steel ultimately landed.
🇺🇸 September 11, 2001.
8:46.
9:03.
9:37.
9:59.
10:03.
10:28.
Just numbers on a clock — until you remember what happened at each one.
In 102 minutes, our country changed forever. Nearly 3,000 lives were stolen. Families were shattered. Heroes ran toward danger while everyone else was trying to escape.
But America did not stay down.
We prayed together. We cried together. We flew our flags from porches, bridges and overpasses. We hugged our children tighter. And for a moment, we remembered that before anything else, we were Americans.
25 years later, I still remember. I still hurt. And I will never stop honoring those we lost and those who ran toward the flames.
May God bless their families. May God bless our first responders. And may God always bless the United States of America. 🇺🇸
We will never forget. 9/11/2001. ❤️🤍💙
[Fourth-Wall Break]
Because many have been asking the l about how I’ll be covering September 11, I’ve put together a Frequently Asked Questions list. I’m pinning it until that day. Please refer to this for your questions and feel free to ask more.
Q: How many posts do you have planned for the event?
At present, about 410, or one every three minutes for the entire day, though there will be an average of two posts a minute between 8:46 and 10:30. It is my earnest hope that the account doesn’t get suspended for spamming at the very beginning. I hope someone from X is reading this.
Q: Is the posting going to be in real-time?
Yes. I worked very hard to learn the exact minute and if possible, the precise second that events occurred on 9/11, and I will post at those exact moments. It will be a completely real-time retelling of the day.
Q: Do you/Will you schedule posts?
No. Automation is impersonal and unnatural. On these accounts I’ve always manually written the posts as I’m posting them, and 9/11 is no exception to the rule.
Q: Are you posting alone, or do you have a team?
All alone. Have been doing this alone for years. It’s a lot of effort.
Q: Will you be showing sensitive content?
No. I had the option to and I decided against it. Graphic photos and video exist, but it would be disrespectful to the victims to show it. You’re welcome to look it up for yourself.
Q: How did you do your research?
I watched 240 hours of video footage, from news reporting to on-the-ground stringers to eyewitness testimony to academic documentas, with the intent to form the most accurate-possible timeline of the event. I also had people professionally associated with and familiar with the event provide their own research, which was helpful. I did my very best to corroborate stories for accuracy and gather every possible detail of the day, and I hope that my work was adequate.
Q: Will you be including any conspiracy theories?
I don’t entertain the conspiracy theories. From my research, I have developed what I believe is the most accurate picture of what happened, and it’s straightforward and logical. There was no conspiracy related to the September 11 attacks. Those who seriously entertain conspiracy theories in the comments will be blocked.
Q: Why do this much? Do you have a personal connection to 9/11?
None. I was too young to remember it. I’m doing this because this is what I’ve done on these live history accounts since 2018.
Q: Was this the whole point of the account?
No. I started this account in “1997” (2022) with the intent to report world news, and that’s what I’ve done for nearly five years. It was not the intent of the account, or I would’ve done thousands of hours of research and posted tens of thousands of unrelated stories just to set up one day.
Q: But it seems like all your posts are 9/11 foreshadowing lately.
Fewer than 1 in 10 of my posts has had any relation to 9/11. I’m insulted when people insinuate that “the account only posts about 9/11.” It’s a gross exaggeration.
Q: Will the account continue afterwards?
Yes, indefinitely. I’m excited to cover the 2000s and the 2010s. I hope that you all stick around for it.
Q: Won’t you make loads of money off this, a tragedy?
Probably not. Last month, X decided to permanently suspend its creator monetization program and replace it with another program. I have not yet applied for the new program, and 9/11 will not be monetized. I am doing this as a passion project and because I love history and have been live-posting history for eight years - long before I was ever paid to do so.
If I do end up being monetized for this day, I’ve had ethical qualms. Earlier this year I decided to donate all the money I made off my posts on September 11, 2026. If I make any money off this, I will do that and post receipts. I encourage you also to donate to the charity of your choice. This was a tragic event and funds deserve to go to the victims of the tragedy and rememberance of it.

BREAKING NEWS ‼️: El Niño is strengthening with a 90%+ chance of a major event and a 75% chance of a historic season this October through December, according to the Climate Prediction Center. FOX Weather Meteorologists Stephen Morgan and Marissa Torres break down the impacts.
TLDR: Anthropic published its most detailed threat report yet on people trying to misuse Claude (Dec 2025–Aug 2026). @i
They found sophisticated attempts across cyber ops, surveillance, influence campaigns, scams, bioweapons research, conventional weapons work, and illicit model distillation. Actors tied to Russia, China, Iran, Yemen and others used Claude to speed up hacking, build surveillance tools, run fake dating-app fraud at scale, and steal reasoning traces to train rival models. https://t.co/yIL2L4CoHC
Anthropic says it shut down every operation it identified, tightened safeguards, and shared intel with authorities and other AI labs. The point of publishing: show where AI misuse is going, and help other platforms spot the same patterns. https://t.co/h53T5gMxvG
We're publishing our most detailed threat intelligence report to date.
It covers how people tried to misuse Claude—for cyberattacks, influence operations, surveillance, biology, and building weapons—and how we found and stopped them.
We disrupted every operation in the report, and used the lessons from them to strengthen our safeguards. Where appropriate, we also shared what we found with authorities and other AI companies.
These cases are not typical: we’re highlighting some of the most sophisticated misuse we’ve seen. But they’re especially important to discuss, because they show us where AI misuse is headed, where our safeguards work, and where they need to improve.
We’re publishing this report so others can spot the same activity on their own platforms, and so we can give the public a clearer view of how emerging threats develop.

💔 it still feels like it was yesterday. Incredible to see this YouTube video of a live broadcast news station go from almost mundane news to the moments the world changed forever.
Somebody, somewhere in NYC for whatever reason recorded the New York 1 morning news broadcast on Sept. 11, 2001.
They wound up recording history. It starts at 8:30 a.m. ET.
You get 15 minutes of news from the Before Times.
Then the world changes.

I worked at Google DeepMind and now at Anthropic. This is a common sentiment amongst my peers.
(I write this in personal capacity.)
There is not yet a viable scientific plan to solve risks from recursively self-improving AI. Please look up!
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
[Writing this in a personal capacity, not on behalf of my employer (Anthropic).]
Jacob’s thread is very worth reading. Here’s my birds-eye view of the situation with risks from AI:
1. AI developers believe their technology could cause human extinction (or similarly bad outcomes). This could happen in the next few years. In general, the more senior the employee, the more concerned they are.
2. Why do AI developers continue despite the risk? Due to a mixture of commercial incentives and a belief that they are in a race with other, less responsible AI developers that will abuse the technology or develop it less safely.
3. Unlike traditional software, we can’t “program” AIs to behave how we’d like. AIs frequently severely misbehave. For instance, AIs from multiple developers recently hacked their way out of secure evaluation environments and into real-world companies, even though no one asked them to do this.
4. We have methods that can nudge AIs towards better behavior, but nothing that can robustly align them. Insofar as there is a plan, it’s to make sure that AIs are good enough at alignment training that they can align their successors better than we can align current AIs.
5. Many AI developer staff desperately want to slow down to figure out how to build AI more safely. That was the intent of this open letter (which I signed): https://t.co/TZOm3LfptY
I work on safety research at Anthropic because I hope my work will reduce the chance of these extinction-level bad outcomes.
