운영팀도, 유저도 전혀 효율이나 동기부여가 안 나오더라구요.

I was talking with a trader earlier today who casually mentioned his "alpha."

When I asked him what he meant, he said his "returns."

I've heard this a thousand times.

Traders often use the word alpha to describe absolute returns or returns above some benchmark like SPY.

By that logic, buying a 3x leveraged SPY ETF would mean you're "generating alpha."

It obviously doesn't.

Here's what traders miss:

You don't actually have alpha until you explicitly subtract beta—your market exposure.

• Alpha isn't returns above the market.

• Alpha is returns entirely independent of the market.

If your returns mostly move with the market, even amplified, that's leveraged beta—not alpha.

Real alpha is subtle, rare, and valuable.

It’s pure, isolated inefficiency capture—returns from skill, not market moves.

Why does this even matter?

Because definitions shape your understanding.

Misusing terms like "alpha" creates illusions of skill, sends traders chasing the wrong goals, and prevents genuine, professional growth.

Precision in language isn't trivial—it's essential.

It defines your path as a trader.
