🚨In press🚨We synthesize neural and behavioral work to ask how predictions and prediction errors lead to memory integration and separation. Super fun collab with this dream team @camillecgasser (first co-author) @TarekAmerPhD@anatmaril1@LilaDavachi! https://t.co/7gHCAum6Jx
What makes some people better at trivia than others?
in one of the most insane multi-year "research is mesearch" journeys ever, we (me + @_laurenwilkins_ + @mariam_s_aly ) ran a study to answer this very question! https://t.co/znIqZyXbby check it out!! 1/ 🧵
Out there!
Happy to tell you about this cool work @TMR_et_al and I (co-first) did together with Bruce Caughran, @kap101 and @LilaDavachi about how unconscious reactivations affect memory differently than conscious reactivations!

I'm so unbelievably excited to share our latest work, the heart and soul of my PhD! With @ChrisBaldassano & @mariam_s_aly
We show that temporal structure is represented bidirectionally and hierarchically across the brain to guide multistep prediction 👇

How are memories transformed over time to enable anticipation of the future?
With consolidation, multistep anticipation becomes more efficient but less perceptually detailed.
Proud of @hannahtstoll for leading this collaboration w/ @ChrisBaldassano!

My lab @UCRiverside is recruiting for a lab manager! We use EEG + fMRI to study human memory in younger and older adults. Fab opportunity for someone thinking about grad school in the future. I’ll begin reviewing apps starting 5/1 so get ‘em in now: https://t.co/SKfxaIuZnz
What is the nature and function of replay? We are excited to propose a memory-focused model that unifies a wide array of findings, including ones unaccounted for by prior models as well as evidence previously taken as diagnostic of value-based RL accounts. https://t.co/NrnQTGsyJv
Happy to share my latest paper with @LilaDavachi where we propose a framework focusing on the role of cortical regions in pattern separation. Now out in @eLife!

More evidence that stat learning has implicit and explicit components, out now in Cognition with @mshelen_liu, @amysuefinn and @duncanlabUofT. We showed implicit knowledge improves w/ a delay, while explicit knowledge improves w/ testing. Check it out! ⏱️📈https://t.co/OOqECwSxXy
New paper showing how agency can bind sequences of information into more holistic episodic memories. Rising star Nick Ruiz really did some gorgeous work. https://t.co/tbUwYyE0rP
New preprint w/ Kevin Ochsner:
Matt Sachs @sachsm53 worked with film score composers to create emotional music, and found brain regions that:
-track emotional dynamics
-represent emotional information
-are sensitive to the recent emotional context!

I'm so excited this is out!! We wrote a review about how the nature of statistical learning may change with development. Feeling very lucky to have had the dream team of mentors to think (and write) about these issues with ⭐️ @amysuefinn@megschlichting@duncanlabUofT
🚨New preprint - Human exploration strategically balances approaching and avoiding uncertainty
that's right - humans sometimes avoid uncertain parts of the environment when exploring
w/ @shadlen@DShohamy

Excited to share this new project! We used intracranial recordings to covertly measure learning as it unfolds. We found that the brain abstracts across experiences *very quickly* to represent higher-order statistical regularities
Our society's hyper-focus on productivity means that we generally consider losing focus a bad thing. In a new paper, we challenge this notion by asking whether losing focus can sometimes be good for learning, and where our mind goes when we lose it 🧵 https://t.co/4xxyJMK2Y9
How do we balance paying attention to the external world vs internal thoughts?
Hippocampus shows differential coupling with basal forebrain & dorsal attention network for externally cued vs memory-guided attention
Proud of @CraigPoskanzer for this work!
https://t.co/FX7Jcp9qsb
Excited to share a new preprint with Asieh Zadbood, @AChanales, @LilaDavachi 😃
https://t.co/axcZt9ocq1
We show that repeated encoding significantly enhances cortical replay and hippocampal-cortical coordinated replay, but not replay in hippocampus.
It always feels trite to call something bittersweet, but I'm not sure that there's a better word to describe how I feel about sharing this paper. This project is so special to me, in so many ways, largely because of my co-first author Sarah DuBrow https://t.co/2lMr2A6qsa
I'm so excited this paper is out with the amazing @Johnny_Dubois_ , @LexiDecker3 & Katherine Duncan! Here we show that lapses in attention might actually be good for learning!!! This one is a fun read - I promise!! https://t.co/AafAubCt4P
