Shameless Harry and Meghan Markle relentlessly briefing the media to the point that we now know when they’re moving back to the UK, that Archie and Lili are starting school there in September, that they’ve already been enrolled and God knows what else is going to be drip-fed to the press next.

And these are the same two who have spent years crying about security concerns, media intrusion and the dangers of their family being exposed.

Make it make sense.

If you’re genuinely terrified of the media knowing where your children are, why are you briefing them about your children’s return to Britain and their schooling before they’ve even started?

This is exactly what makes the Sussexes so exhausting. They want the publicity when it serves them, but the moment the publicity produces the inevitable attention, they want to blame the media for that too.

And I can already see where this is heading. The school becomes a story. The children become a story. Their movements become a story. Photographers inevitably turn up. Then comes the outrage, the security complaints, the accusations of harassment and another round of demands for everyone else to accommodate them.

And the part I find most infuriating is what this is going to mean for William and Catherine. Because Harry and Meghan can come back, generate an entire media ecosystem around themselves and then sit back while the press turns the family fallout into another story about William.

William will be expected to reconcile. William will be questioned about Harry. William will be asked why the children aren’t together. William will be blamed if there’s no warm royal reunion. And if he says nothing, that silence will be interpreted for him.

That is the Sussex tactic I find so maddening. They don’t necessarily have to attack William directly. They create the situation, the media pick it up, and William is left standing in the middle of the fallout while they get to control the narrative from the sidelines.

Catherine and William have done nothing to invite this circus back into their lives. They have their children, their duties and their own future to protect.

Yet somehow the people who walked away, went to America, told the world their side of the story and spent years attacking the institution are now returning with their children and everyone else is supposed to adjust around them.

This isn’t privacy. This is publicity with plausible deniability.

And honestly, if this is what the first week of their return looks like, God help the Wales family when they’re actually back.
