@Lavi_Mais look grab the AO3 torrent if you want, use the vibecoded slop websites, go with god, but you're wrong. you're right that no one can stop you, that the law's not coming for you. but it's wrong, and you're not going to talk a bunch of writers into thinking you're right.
@wardenthornes They are talking about how you can't reproduce actually copyrighted material, like you can't take an actual published book and translate it on Ao3 without permission. This part of the TOS is talking about the copyrighted works fics are based on, not the fics themselves
for anyone struggling with the whole “fanfic writers don’t own their works” concept, i strongly suggest reading this legal article, which explores the blurred lines between copyright infringement, derivative works, and the rights fanfiction writers may hold over their own original contributions.
there is a fundamental difference between owning the intellectual property your work is based on and holding rights to the original writing you’ve created.
fanfiction writers do not own the characters or worlds they borrow, but that does not automatically mean their own creative contributions are devoid of copyright protection.
the distinction matters.

Reading comprehension is sadly a national epidemic and these kiddos are the prime example of that.
Fics CAN be hosted in gdrives, if the author is okay with it. If they aren't, they have a way to remove them. This applies to ANY app or website that posts without permission.
these people immediately jumped to uploading fics to massive drive without the author's consent instead of trying to connect the readers to author's public socials. most writers i know have their own drive or would be willing to privately share the file of their fics >
would have a million times more respect for the drive weirdos if they were just like "look I miss and want to read fic" vs trying to argue authors are like bourgeois reincarnations of anne rice for being a little put off that their work is being redistributed without permission
@Lavi_Mais@VieVieTuber@wardenthornes Idk much abt US copyright laws but if it was in their tos it probably means the authors, at least, have 'partial rights' over their fanfics
@Lavi_Mais@night_babel@VieVieTuber this is a wild mindset to have when you think building community is a part of what fan writers should be responsible for
@Lavi_Mais@v1taminpOps@ill_be_ur_home it is no more ethical than what openai and anthropic have done. that will clearly not stop anyone. it is still wrong.
@Lavi_Mais@v1taminpOps@ill_be_ur_home AO3 won't pursue legal action about the drives, true. but my argument is that the framework of permissions and rights that the archive is built on contradicts the carte blanche "I can scrape and reupload everything on AO3" philosophy.
