@Michael_J_Hil@visitcamberwell As a keen cyclist, I’m afraid it’s more that humans can be rude idiots rather than individual groups of drivers, cyclists, pedestrians. Many cyclists are also drivers, pedestrians & people who are dckheads in everyday life - I suspect behaviour trancends their mode of transport
It's not just the exploitation of a tragedy.

@johndoe_0@SCP_Hughes@rcolvile@jo3hill@ezraklein I believe we have repeatedly failed to build enough houses to satisfy need and demand for decades. But it’s not due to extra costs resulting from govts increase regulatory requirements - more a failure of the planning system.
We're remembering Ralph Milne today, on what would have been his 65th birthday.

@bwfc_elliot 16 points off an auto spot. Sunday was absolutely brilliant but we shouldn’t think that squad was anywhere near Championship quality. JOT had a great end to the season as did Johno, but think back across the whole season and are they really Championship quality?
@sportingintel Brilliant to hear a PS track on such a great series. And also two The The tracks over the series. Surely a BAFTA beckons for whoever chose the soundtracks.

Easily one of the best we'll see.
If you want to know why it takes years to build anything in Britain, here’s your answer.
One development submitted seven and a half thousand pages of documents. Four hundred and fifty separate files. And it was still told there wasn’t enough detail.
That isn’t scrutiny. That’s paralysis.
Developers are forced to comply with dozens of overlapping policies. Local plans. London Plan. Emerging policies. Supplementary guidance. Then they’re told the scheme is too tall and not tall enough. Too much office space and not enough. Too much green roof and not enough biodiversity. It’s a Catch-22 planning system.
Even when councillors vote in favour, decisions can be delayed, reframed, or dragged into another round of negotiations and monitoring fees.
The result? No homes. No jobs. No investment.
We need fewer policies, clearer rules, and a real presumption in favour of sustainable development. If a scheme meets an adopted design code and delivers homes and jobs in high transport areas, it should get permission. Full stop.
Britain doesn’t have a shortage of good ideas. We have a shortage of decisions.
And until we fix the planning system, growth will always be optional.
This is eye-opening. I knew the planning system was broken, but it is worse than even I thought.
When I heard that planners had recommended Hackney councillors block the extremely popular Shoreditch Works development I asked @Michael_J_Hil to read the planners' report and look through hundreds of documents submitted by the developer.
It is really bad.
- Developers submitted NINE THOUSAND PAGES of paperwork, planners said it wasn't detailed enough.
- Planners said it should be rejected because some flats would lack enough natural light due to shadows cast by other parts of the development.
- Planners simultaneously argued there weren't enough homes, didn't provide enough office space, and it was too tall.
- Developers had to comply with 42 separate Hackney policies, 75 separate London Plan policies, the Hackney Borough Site Allocations Plan, five other separate sets of standards and policy frameworks, two sets of ‘emerging’ unfinalised policies, plus all relevant national legislation and guidance.
- The design review panel criticised the project because every building was of the same architectural style. Planners ignored the surveys showing huge public support for the designs.
- New homes must provide outdoor space so residents have access to a green roof, but planners said that might disturb nature. (This is on an exclusively brownfield site)
Councillors have an opportunity tonight to overrule the planners. I sincerely hope they do!

@lordofthedarts1 100% spot on. Same last season. They’re human just like us. If they think booing or shouting “ur fckin useless” is going to help them play better, they are as thick as pigsh!t #bwfc

New from @oliver_wright
* Labour voters **overwhelming** back joining a customs union with the EU as Wes Streeting defies Keir Starmer to support the move
* A YouGov for The Times found that 80% of those who backed Labour at the last election thought a new leader should scrap the government’s existing policy and negotiate a customs union deal with the EU
* The policy is also supported by 78% of Liberal Democrat voters and even 39% of those who voted Tory at the last election
* YouGov polling also shows large-scale support among Labour voters at the last election not only to join a customs union but also to rejoin the EU
* It found that 73% of those who backed Labour at the last election thought the government should start negotiations to rejoin the EU. Half of all voters said they would back the approach
* Starmer has ruled out joining a customs union, describing it as a ‘clear red line’. He said it would ‘unravel’ trade deals with the US and India
* But Streeting used an interview with The Observer to argue that it would give Labour a distinctive message to take on Reform at the next election
* He told @RSylvester1: ‘We’re not going to win the next election by trying to out-Reform Reform. That’s not who we are. Those aren’t our values and we’ve got to beat them, not join them.’
* He said Britain has taken a ‘massive economic hit’ from Brexit. ‘I’m really uncomfortable with the level of taxation in this country. We’re asking a lot of individual taxpayers, we’re asking a lot of businesses. We’ve got a level of indebtedness that we need to take very seriously. The best way for us to get more growth into our economy is a deeper trading relationship with the EU’
