Cillian Murphy says he was competing against Jason Statham for the role of Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders.
“Steven Knight met both of us in LA to talk about Thomas Shelby.”
Murphy says Statham immediately had the physical presence they were looking for, while he didn’t exactly look like Tommy Shelby.
“Jason was Jason—he walks into a room, he’s physically imposing, he looks like he can snap you in half. And I’m... well, I’m not that. I’m quite slight.”
Murphy says Knight later told him he was leaning toward Statham because, in person, Murphy didn’t look like Tommy at all.
So after the meeting, Murphy sent Knight a short text:
“Remember, I’m an actor.”
“And that was it. That’s what tipped the scales.”
