🚨 At least 121 civilians killed, 293 missing, 60,000 displaced and 1,119 homes destroyed in 12 days of attacks by @AbiyAhmedAli regime forces in Gida Ayana Woreda, East Wollega Zone

12 consecutive days of attacks systematically carried out by Oromia security forces against ethnic Amhara and Tigrayan residents has resulted in the following casualties:

Human casualties

▪️People killed: More than 121 civilians, ranging from a six-month-old infant to an 85-year-old elderly person, have been killed.

▪️Church servants: Seven church servants—including an Aba Qomos, priests, clergy, deacons, and monks—were beaten and/or killed.

▪️Missing persons: The whereabouts of 293 people remain unknown.

▪️Displacement: More than 60,000 displaced people are currently sheltering in just four displacement camps. This figure does not include those who have fled to Addis Ababa, Nekemte, and other areas.

Destruction of institutions

▪️Churches: Eleven churches have been completely or partially destroyed.

▪️Communities displaced: Most residents of 15 villages and small towns have been displaced.

Destruction and looting of property

▪️Villages: Five villages have been completely or partially burned.

▪️Homes: 1,119 residential homes have been completely or partially destroyed, looted, or burned.

▪️Grain and property: More than 40 grain-storage facilities have been looted or destroyed.

▪️Livestock: More than 15,700 cattle, pack animals, goats, and sheep have been driven away (looted).

▪️Vehicles: More than 20 vehicles and motorcycles have been looted or burned.

▪️Property estimated to be worth billions of birr has been destroyed.

🚨 #FactCheck: These images do not show a farmer’s coffee plantation recently destroyed by Fano fighters in East Wollega Zone

@EthiopiaCheck — Over the past few weeks, reports have emerged of fighting between government security forces and Fano fighters in Gida Ayana Woreda, East Wollega Zone, Oromia Region. It has also been reported that many residents have been displaced from their homes as a result of the fighting.

In connection with this, images said to show a farmer’s coffee plantation in the zone destroyed by Fano fighters have been circulating on social media.

The images, which have been circulating since yesterday, Wednesday, September 3rd, 2026, have also been shared by Facebook accounts and pages with large numbers of followers and have generated significant engagement.

Among those who shared the information is an account named “Alex Taye,” which has more than 300,000 followers. The account shared the images with the caption: “This is the coffee plantation of a Wollega farmer destroyed by Fano extremists.”

The post shared by this account has been reshared by more than 300 Facebook users and has received more than 700 comments.

However, Ethiopia Check’s verification of the images confirmed that they were not taken recently.

Through a reverse image search, we found that the images had already been shared on social media a year ago.

At the time, social media pages that shared the images stated that they had been taken in Dawro Zone, South West Ethiopia Region.

Old images taken from other locations and shared out of context can expose us to false and misleading information. Therefore, before believing or resharing such content, we should carry out appropriate verification.

Protect Amhara civilians in Wollega and Arsi: End the killings, open aid corridors, investigate every massacre!

Amhara civilians in Oromia’s Wollega and Arsi zones are being killed, driven from their villages, and watching churches burn - while the world barely notices.

Reports describe mass displacement in East Wollega, renewed attacks in Arsi, and security forces failing to protect civilians. Children and priests are among the dead.

This is not “internal politics.” It is a protection crisis.

The UN, AU, and governments with influence in Addis Ababa should demand:

• Immediate civilian protection

• Humanitarian access for the displaced

• An independent investigation of killings in Wollega and Arsi - whoever the perpetrators are?

No ethnicity is disposable. Silence is permission.

⚡️Thousands of Amhara displaced as regime forces indiscriminately fire on Amhara communities and use tanks to shell homes, and Orthodox church grounds in Gida-Ayana Woreda (📍East Wollega Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia).

🔴 Between September 1st–2nd, federal and Oromia regional forces backed by Qeerroo mobilized large contingents toward the Ali and Meleketa areas of Andode-Dicho Kebele under the premise of targeting Fano, opening indiscriminate fire on residential neighborhoods and forcing residents to flee into surrounding forests.

🔴 During the operations, regime forces used heavy weaponry, including tanks, to shell residential areas, forest locations where displaced civilians had sought refuge, and the compound of Nigulo-Gabriel Church in the Meleketa and Ali localities.

🔴 Tens of thousands of civilians remain displaced outdoors following consecutive offensives by federal and regional forces. Continued gunfire has prevented many from returning home, leaving displaced families without adequate shelter and facing severe hunger while sheltering in nearby forests.
