The Warkaris of Pandharpur – The Night the Center Was Removed

The year was 1345 CE.

The banners of Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah’s generals were already cutting across the Deccan.

Daulatabad had been absorbed.
Devagiri bent under pressure.
Pilgrimage towns were being examined.

Pandharpur stood exposed —
not a fort,
not a capital,
but a convergence.

The Bhima flowed quietly that night.
Too quietly.

Inside the Vitthala temple, lamps burned low.

Not in panic.
In calculation.

The Warkaris knew the pattern.

Armies did not arrive only for land.
They arrived to disrupt return.

Vitthala was not guarded by soldiers.
He was guarded by repetition.

Annual.
Predictable.
Unbroken.

No resistance would hold.
No martyrdom would preserve rhythm.

So the Warkaris chose removal.

Under cover of darkness, the murti was taken down.

Gold gave way to cloth.
Song gave way to silence.

No abhangas were sung.

Because continuity does not announce itself.

Before dawn, they reached the Bhima.

The idol was lowered into the river.

Not lost.
Not abandoned.

Withdrawn.

By morning, the troops entered Pandharpur.

They broke stone.
They emptied halls.
They marked the shrine subdued.

Imperial registers recorded success.

What they did not record was this:

Pilgrimage did not stop.

It shifted.

For years, the Warkaris gathered by the river.

No sanctum.
No calendar.
No interruption.

When pressure eased, the murti returned.

No reconsecration.
No proclamation.
No validation.

The system had held.

History remembers campaigns.

Bhakti remembers continuity.

यह छुआछूत की बीमारी अंग्रेजों ने हिंदू धर्म को तोड़ने के लिए एक साजिश के तहत डाली थी!!

जातियां थी, पर उनके मध्य एक प्रेम की धारा भी बहती थी, जिसका कभी कोई उल्लेख नहीं करता।

A girl files a harassment complaint. Police record her personal details, address, phone, etc, and then hand them to the accused, saying, “Go sort it out among yourselves.”

Is that how redressal works? When a passenger files a complaint about catering on a train, your system collects their PNR and seat number. Why is that information being shared with the catering staff? If there is an issue on board, the details should be passed only to the TTE and Railway Police, who should proceed with an impartial investigation, without producing the complainant in front of the same staff they complained against.

Look at how Swiggy and Zomato handle complaints: the customer submits proof, the platform investigates internally, and necessary action is taken. If IRCTC were running Swiggy, they’d probably share the customer’s details with the delivery guy and ask both to meet and “resolve it personally.”

Completely unacceptable. Incidents of passengers being threatened, abused, or assaulted for complaining about overcharging are increasing. It’s a systemic failure of grievance redressal. Reform is required.

If you did you may well learn that Hinduism doesn’t share the need to wish your spouse comes around to see things as you do in terms of religion. Hinduism is inherently inclusive and pluralistic in this way. We do not seek to convert anyone. We embrace the idea that there are multiple ways of conceiving of the Divine. Yet, there remains a compulsion, from some religious communities, to convert us to another way of thinking, that goes beyond mere dialog and sharing of differing opinions.

There is also a history of Christians denigrating Hindus, attempting to convert Hindus through sometimes unethical means. In recent months we’ve seen an outpouring of anti-Hindu sentiment online, often coming from explicitly Christian sources.

Both of these underpin the sentiment that your statements re your wife’s religious heritage are reflective of a belief that there is only one true path to salvation — a concept that Hinduism simply doesn’t have — and that path is through Christ.

Some of the most vocal voices in your base seem to not actually believe religious freedom — one of the core concepts this nation was founded upon, as you well know — should extend to Hindus.

You are the VP. It’s more than reasonable (and well within precedent) for a Christian public figure such as yourself to acknowledge the positive impact of Hinduism on Hindus and the rights of Hindus to practice.

He has had a long and distinguished career in movies usually playing villians and character actors.

In real life he is a trained psychiatrist, graudate of B.J.Medical College, Pune and unlike others his is not a case of "Doctor to Actor". Rather he is one of the very few, who actually pursues both of them actively.

When he is not acting in movies,TV serials or on the stage, he is out there teaching pyschiatry at B.J.Medical College, Pune and also Sasson Hospital there.

He actually has quite a stellar record in clinical psychology as well as pharma psychology. He founded the Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health, and many of his students, now work in prestigious positions in India, as well as in UK, US.

He also led a project in 1988 to improve the education on mental health, and he served as an advisor to the Govt of Maharashtra, on Mental Health Education and Service, playing a role in drafting their policy too.

A truly remarkable person who apart from being a succesful pyschiatrist, also takes time off to pursue his passions in theater, and movies.
