Life update 💫 Ya girl is starting her Master of Fine Arts (Poetry) in January at @pacificuMFA! 🥳 I’ll be exploring Caribbean situatedness from a Chinese Jamaican lens with the guidance of their stellar faculty.

I’m honoured to be a recipient of the @kwamedawes Mapmaker, Washburn, and MFA Merit Scholarships which have helped make this dream possible 🙏

Performing my poetry for the first time in 2019 was exhilarating. There was something unique about that feeling I knew I wanted to pursue.

While I’ve always been creative, making it a career always felt terrifying. But working with @asyncart and being involved with @theverseverse the past few years showed me the creative path is viable. Telling other artists’ stories gave me a deeper desire to tell my own.

This past year, with the help of several people and communities I’ve gradually reoriented my life towards my writing and the MFA felt like the right next step to lay a strong foundation.

Does this mean I’m leaving Jamaica? Nah, it’s a low residency programme so I can stay based here and will go to Oregon for short residencies twice a year.

Does this mean I’m saying goodbye to marketing? Nah, I’m still balancing a few freelance projects while in school.

I’m forever grateful for the inspiring creatives and builders I've crossed paths with here in web3. Your boldness, experimentalism, and curiosity ignited my own.

Thank you to everyone who has challenged me, my creative work, and my line of questioning, particularly writers from Papine Writing Collective, @theverseverse, @PoetrySocietyJA, Off the Page, Journal of Jamaican Art, @PreeLit, @bocaslitfest, and @pacificuMFA. I couldn’t have gotten to this point of belief in my craft without you.

@joshuasolas_ To seek asylum, you typically have to prove that you are individually persecuted. Climate has been added as a valid reason to claim but as of Dec 2024 no country had accepted claims on this basis. So, prob not unless we have special agreements with countries 😞

🥧 PIE, the catalog 🥧

Last year today I released a poem called PIE. It sold out before dinner. A few months later, a group gathered in Berlin to eat PIE for dessert.

The work changed me, showed me things about myself and others I never dreamed. And though it doesn’t satisfy, indeed it serves a sliver of what a poem can do.

To honor the work from its hologram beginnings to cake translations, I made a catalog of the work, to date. Complete with an artist statement, 27 pages of pictures, and acknowledgements + gratitude, the digital version is linked below to read & download.

None of this would have been possible without my collaborators, collectors, and organizers. Gratitude of this magnitude is hard to articulate, and while I did my best in the acknowledgments, words only go so far.

To everyone who reads, hears, and eats PIE, thank you from the hardest parts of me slowly softened by being seen 🤍
