As a DIY landlord, I just got my 3BR/3.5BA apartment back from my tenants who rented it for 3 years. (This used to be our primary residence but we moved out of the city during COVID and decided to rent it out.) They were a family with an annual combined income of $500K with 2 young kids in NYC.

Before leaving, they told me they loved living in my unit and did their best to take care of it.

Upon doing the move-out walk-through, this is what I found (not exhaustive):

-Oil and grease stained kitchen appliances and countertops
-Food grease and scraps all over the inside of the fridge and freezer
-Holes & scratches on multiple walls because of hanging TVs and paintings
-Damaged toilet bidet wash-lets seats
-Dirty toilets (dried poop stains), vanity and sink

The final quote to fix and restore all of this from my contractor was $25K, not including cleaning and polishing the floors which would cost another $5K.

The damage was much more significant than I expected. But as an owner, what bothered me the most is the lack of respect of not even trying to clean before moving out. 🤬

Anyone else feel this way?

I think I learned my lesson that even the best renters will never take care of the product like an owner.
