@IDBsomerset has responded quickly and already searched this location twice and removed any pennywort found, we will continue our effort. We are also working with @EnvAgencySW on a Somerset wide programme of pennywort surveillance and control.
Wetland invasive species #SomersetLevels a small patch of Floating Pennywort has been found in the Penzoy river near Middlezoy. The first record of pennywort in a pump drained channel on the Somerset Levels (Westonzoyland pumps).
If pennywort is allowed to establish here it will fill and clog the Penzoy and spread downstream into the Kings Sedgemoor Drain. It has the potential to be an enormous problem with serious consequences for flood management and wetland ecology.
The £5.45 million Lowland Agricultural Peat Small Infrastructure Pilot (LAPSIP) will be delivered between 2023 and 2025 with the support of @ADA_updates
We look forward to working with #InternalDrainageBoards in delivering innovative water level management for lowland peatlands
The environment agency has inspected 4000 farms and found 5,500 non compliance issues.
Shows the importance of regulatory enforcement, not just for the environment but also to create a level playing field for those farms who are spending money to do the right thing.
