I find it odd that I have to explain this, but clearly there is a need.
Hegseth's willingness to livestream an execution has nothing to do with the sentence. Whether you are for capital punishment or against it (like I am), Nidal Hasan was convicted and sentenced to death by a court-martial. There is no ambiguity about the sentence, and in a country that permits capital punishment, it is legal and, given his crimes, perhaps even justified.
An execution that is livestreamed, however, is a government-produced snuff movie. It can inure us to state violence and feed our worst instincts and bloodlust. It is not the hallmark of a civilized country. Indeed, we have previously condemned countries that carry out public executions.
We have a justice system to maintain public order, protect rights and liberties, deter crime, and punish wrongdoing. It is not about revenge, humiliating prisoners, satisfying a public baying for blood, or providing material for watch parties with popcorn.
Pete Hegseth is dragging us back into medieval times, where civilization and empathy have little meaning. Nidal Hasan committed horrific crimes and was sentenced to death, but do we have to make ourselves worse people in the process?
One day we will look back on this period in American history not just in severe embarrassment but with complete incomprehension. How did this happen? How did Idiocracy become real life in the richest, and one of the most educated, societies in human history?
Three weeks ago Trump signed the Lindsey Graham Russia Sanctions bill as a testament to Graham's commitment to put an economic stranglehold on Putin. Today Trump announces we're importing massive fuel from Russia
This honestly feels like living through an episode of Black Mirror. The same people who claim to worry about what our children see on the internet are planning a government-run livestream of an execution. How much darkness is this going to unleash? Just unbelievably sick stuff.
China product export resumes
1⃣As discussed in the previous brief "The widely anticipated return of China from Golden Week", Reuters reported today that China has resumed October fuel exports at around 3.7 mt.
2⃣This number is about 700 kt lower than the September export allowance of 4.4 mt. However on a pro-rated basis (i.e. only 23 days to be exported out of 31 days), the reduction in export volume is fairly close. This indicates the pace of exports for the remaining part of the month should be similar to September.
3⃣The anticipated product impact remains unchanged from the first brief, where prompt regrade should weaken, prompt diesel spreads weaken.
4⃣Product cracks probably will suffer a knee-jerk reaction by weakening, but ultimately is bounded by refining margins needing to be positive. With dirty freight likely to remain stubbornly elevated and AG crude FOBs already adjusting weaker, my view is product cracks will be next to move up to keep the medium refining margins positive.
5⃣There was another report that the 3rd batch of product export quotas were released, 4.5 mt for CPP, 1.1 mt for LSFO. Not surprisingly, the total export quota for 2026 is lower than 2025. This is not to be confused with the monthly quota that was introduced since mid this year as a tighter control from the Chinese government in view of the US-Iran war.

NEW: DOJ's civil rights division, down about 300 career lawyers, has hastily hired a new crop of 130 people -- some w/ criminal records, minimal experience, tarnished work histories, hyperpartisanship and downright bizarre public statements.
