@USA_Polling As an empirical matter, the deficit wasn’t really a problem from 2009 to 2022, but it has been since then. So Democrats changing their position on this makes sense (even if it is mostly just backlash to Trump in reality).
@ArmandDoma Aren’t those just examples of the fact that once politicians actually try to make big legislative changes they inevitably get backlash rather than just raising salience?
@DeanPreston Because building solely affordable housing using public funds is unsustainable and is not a solution. Large amounts of housing both at a market rate and some portion being affordable with public funds is what is needed, and you oppose it.
@powellnyt @DKarol@jonathanchait Ok you agree that this wasn’t intended, yet when it is the consequence of a poorly designed system you can’t figure out why people are upset about it?
@AllsKnow@WillOremus@CapitalEdgeNY If Atherton builds more housing that is unaffordable to most, people buying that housing will no longer be jacking up the value of houses in areas with lower prices through reduced demand. We should build more housing of all types everywhere.
@Politically_Ill @ChiCyph80 @mattyglesias Not if it is the best compromise we can get while still reducing Carbon output over doing nothing? If we just insist on making fossil fuel energy more expensive rather than compromise, that will result in more Republicans getting elected and doing worse.
@anthonyzenkus@nailatrahman@Phil_Lewis_@POTUS You do know that Senate Democrats in 2009 consisted of a large number of conservatives, right? There were not 60 votes to ban assault weapons and there were not 50 votes to overturn the filibuster in 2009.
@DeanPreston@katewillett @gmarkoff I can guarantee you that I have extremely high interest in SF YIMBY policies, and extreme aversion to putting too many people in jail, stopping progressive taxes or screwing workers.
@larryameadows@jbarro I don’t think this is completely true. This is something that can be done without Manchin/Sinema sign-off, so that’s where the focus is. BBB was the clear focus for a while, but when that became impossible, focus shifted to the possible.
