This is rarely explained well. Ethiopia’s electoral system is based on the first-past-the-post principle: winning a seat does not require the support of all voters, only more votes than competing candidates. As a result, electoral victories should not automatically be interpreted as unanimous public endorsement or what journalists call a landslide.
