I think this is more like a design-by-subscription setup. The “most popular” guy usually isn’t the one actually working on every deliverable, it’s just not scalable if they’re managing multiple clients at $5k/month. What typically happens is that you’re paying for the brand name, but the actual work is delegated to juniors or a small team behind the scenes. So you often see slow iterations, mistakes or work that doesn’t match the hype, as you’re not really hiring that one person, you’re hiring their system

Each with their own style, experience, and flavor of mastery.

But you’re not here for dinner. You’re hiring.

So you hand them all a raw potato and say:

Some go classic. Some reinvent. Some overthink. Some don’t even try. One guesses exactly what you like. You hire them.

But what did you really learn?

Not who understands the full menu.
Not who can run the kitchen.
Not who can build systems or scale flavor across locations.
You just learned who got lucky aiming at a moving, invisible target.

Design tests often work the same way.

People say they’re measuring thinking, process, clarity.

But the truth? It’s just a blindfolded taste test with vague expectations.
A rushed task won’t show how someone solves for complexity.

It won’t show if they ask the right questions.
It won’t show if they make the team better.
It shows one thing: who guessed your flavor.
