Here’s a weird thing. I owned a business and had purchased long term disability insurance. When I got sick it started paying but it forced me to apply for SS disability EVEN though the coverage was for my ‘own occupation’ til 65 and not ‘any occupation’. They provided an attorney for me and I was approved. However, they reduce my benefit from the policy by the amount SS provides. I paid the premiums and I’ve paid into SS for almost 40 years. The policy is written to let the insurance company off the hook. That’s the contract, but I don’t think that should be legal. Insurance contracts are highly regulated.
