OPERATION EAGLE CLAW
April 24 1980

On November 4 1979, 300 militant students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 63 Americans hostage. By mid-November 13 hostages had been freed. The remaining 53 hostages waited out five months of failed negotiations.
American military commanders refined a plan for a rescue mission involving all four branches of our military. President Carter gave the go ahead. The operation called for helicopters and C-130 aircraft to rendezvous on a salt flat (Desert One) 200 miles southeast of Tehran.
Of the eight Navy helicopters that left the USS Nimitz, two broke down and the entire group was hindered by a low-level dust storm landing at Desert One 90 minutes late. There, another helicopter was deemed unfit so the mission could not be accomplished with only five helicopters, was aborted.
As the forces were leaving a helicopter collided with a C-130 and exploded destroying both aircraft killing eight men. The remaining troops were quickly evacuated by plane, leaving behind several helicopters, equipment, weapons, maps and the dead.
Operation Eagle Claw helped transform the U.S. military internal operating procedures and signaled a rebirth of Special Operations within the U.S. military. The mission marked the debut of the U.S. Army's Delta force and led to the development of elite counterterrorism forces such as Seal Team Six.
