Q: Michael, your reaction to President Trump saying that U.S. struck a deal taking control of a huge portion of Venezuela’s oil reserves?

McFAUL: This is imperialism. This is 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th century imperialism.

When countries in the North went to countries in the South and used military power and military force to extract gold, silver, spices, oil.

That’s what President Trump is doing with this deal.

I’m embarrassed as an American to be associated with a government that is doing this.

The whole world will react the same way.

Venezuelan people are reacting that way because the second thing that’s so outrageous about this deal is that Trump has done it with a dictator.

Delcy Rodríguez has no legitimacy inside Venezuela. She’s never been elected to anything.

She was vice president under Maduro.

And yet that’s the person we’re doing this deal with, leaving out the preferences of the citizens of Venezuela.

I think it’s a really bad deal, and I don’t think it’s going to work.

If you’re on the board of any serious company, are you going to invest hundreds of billions of dollars when your property rights are guaranteed by Trump and illegitimate dictator of Venezuela?

To me, that’s a very imprudent decision, and my prediction is this will fall apart.

President Trump again tweeted about me. This time it was a video of me talking about his administration's efforts to curb voting by mail.

First and foremost, voting and our democracy are safe. Voting by mail is safe. There are some states, like Utah, that vote 90% by mail. But this is part of a much bigger story of President Trump’s obsession with disinformation and misinformation about our elections because he fears he's going to lose or his party is going to lose in November.  This is all part of the president's efforts to lay down a storyline ahead of the November elections so that if his party loses, he can wrongly claim fraud.

So, let's review the bidding on what the president has done just in the past six or seven months to create this narrative.

1⃣ He kicked off the redistricting wars to protect his Republican majorities.
2⃣ He gutted the Voting Rights Act from the 1960s.
3⃣ He's suing 30 states for their voter rolls, including the state of Michigan.
4⃣ He also said in the State of the Union that if his side doesn't win in November, the elections were rigged.
5⃣ He's obsessively pushed the Save America Act, which would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote.
6⃣ And then most importantly in my book, he and his cabinet have refused to rule out sending uniformed military or federal law enforcement to our polls.

 I think it's important to realize that this is all part of a well-worn authoritarian playbook. As a former CIA officer, I've seen this movie play out overseas. It usually ends up with the leader creating a justification to send uniformed military or federal law enforcement to the polls in the 11th hour.  

The president can post about me. He can make fun of me all he wants. I barricaded myself in my office on January 6th, the last time he tried to overturn an election. And earlier this year, he tried to criminally indict me for a 90-second video. The intimidation is the point.

But in our 250th year, nothing is more important than protecting our democracy and our fundamental right to vote.

And you call Greenland badly governed?

Greenland has universal healthcare. Free education. One of the lowest incarceration rates in the world.
Nobody there goes bankrupt because they got sick. Nobody dies in a waiting room because insurance refused treatment.
