An American impaled himself with a trekking pole and walked 16 km to avoid paying for an evacuation

David suffered a serious injury while hiking. He slipped and fell directly onto his gear — a trekking pole went straight through his thigh.

Knowing how much a mountain rescue operation could cost, the man decided not to call for help. Instead, he climbed down the mountain on his own and walked about 16 km in six hours.

David eventually made it to a hospital, where he received medical treatment. He understood all the risks but chose to save money.
