Any and all Mulaney Reads-ers.
“North Sun or the Voyage of the Whaleship Esther” is my July must must must read. This book is so batshit. Funny, bizarre, violent reckless, and very moving.
I haven’t read “Moby Dick” because whatever but Ethan Rutherford’s description of catching a whale or failing to catch a whale is one of the most visceral things I have ever absorbed. We are back in “Fatal Shore” or “Feast of Snakes” territory where things get brutal. But it can’t all be Michelangelo and sunsets and so forth.
This is also ANOTHER recommendation from J. Michaels Books in Eugene, Oregon making it perhaps the most successful single day haul I have had in years. I suggest you pay them a visit.
Buy “North Sun or the Voyage of the Whaleship Esther” at your local bookseller.
Very carsick on way to Saratoga,

if people were paid decent wages, tips would be redundant.
service persons are paid outrageously low wages so that patrons are obliged to be co-employers: that is, to provide part of the wages which the employer should be paying but is too cheap to pay.
this custom--"tipping"--is so ingrained in capitalist culture, no one seems aware of its purpose. yes, tipping does allow the generous tipper to feel good about themselves & bask in the adulation such tippers receive; but we would guess that the service person would far rather be paid a higher wage than smile & flatter the "big tipper" as if the entire enterprise isn't condescending & humbling & undermines the argument for a higher minimum wage.
Robert Redford didn't watch "The Sting" (1973) until 2004, 31 years after the movie was released. He finally decided to see it when he and his grandson were hunting for a video to watch.
Redford said, "I had never seen 'The Sting' up until then. I was in Europe making 'The Great Gatsby' (1974) when it came out in cinemas and then afterwards I didn’t really want to look back. My daughter asked us to get pizza and an old movie. My grandson said he hadn’t seen The Sting, and I said, ‘How come? What’s the matter with your mother?’ Then he asked if I had seen it and I had to say ‘No’. We watched it and I really loved it."
P.S: Remembering the great American actor and filmmaker, Robert Redford on his 90th birthday!
Josh Brolin Says He Had the Weirdest Moment Ever Inside Donald Trump’s Apartment
So, we're in his apartment, and he's telling us where he was standing when he watched the towers go down during 9/11.
So, he's showing me around his apartment, and then he... then we stopped and started talking, and it was me, Shia, the two of them, and Oliver.
“I said, ‘Can I see upstairs?’ I said, ‘What’s upstairs?’ He said, ‘Our bedroom.’ And I said, ‘Can I see upstairs?’”
“He said, ‘Yeah.’ And then nobody moved.”
“And I said, ‘Cool. So, should we go up?’ He said, ‘Yeah.’”
“And then he still didn’t move. And I’m thinking, ‘What the fuck is happening? Like, it’s literally, we’re in The Twilight Zone now.’”
“I looked at Oliver. I looked at Shia, he didn’t know what was going on.”
“I said it a third time. ‘So, should we go upstairs?’ He goes, ‘Sure.’”
“And he didn’t move.”
“And then there was silence, and I said, ‘Well, thanks for having us here. I really appreciate it.’”
“He goes, ‘Yeah, no problem.’”
“It was the weirdest fucking moment.”
Natalie Harp, known as Donald Trump’s “human printer,” is the incredibly devoted (some might say unsettlingly obsessed) Trump aide whose job is to print out flattering articles about Trump and deliver them to him in a Lululemon bag. But her whole deal is even weirder.
According to a ‘Vanity Fair’ excerpt of ‘All or Nothing,’ Michael Wolff’s book about the 2024 election, Harp is so wholly committed to Trump that she recently spent a summer living in a golf-club locker room just to be close to him.

“Do You Support Israel’s Right to Exist?” Mehdi Hasan FIRES BACK
Mehdi Hasan: I've been debating hardcore Zionists, Israeli supporters of Israel, for years. And the conversation always comes back to one talking point:
“Do you, or do you not support Israel’s right to exist?”
If you don't, you're an extremist, you're an anti-Semite, you want to wipe Israel and millions of Israeli Jews off the map.
But you don't have to concede on this point. It's a bullshit argument.
Number one: Right to exist where?
Israel is the only country in the world that refuses to define its borders.
So if you want me to recognize Israel's right to exist, does that extend into Gaza, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, East Jerusalem all considered illegally occupied territory under international law?
So, right to exist where?
Number two: What is this right to exist? Where does it come from?
States don't have a right to exist. People, individuals have a right to exist. Human beings have that right. Not states, not countries.
The USSR broke up into Russia and 14 other states. Yugoslavia broke up. Czechoslovakia split into Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
What happened to their “right to exist”?
People have rights, not states.
And number three: If there is a right to exist, does Palestine have a right to exist?
Israel exists. It's a country with sovereignty, it's on the map.
The idea that in a world where Israel is genociding the Palestinians in Gaza, ethnically cleansing them in the West Bank, and blocking their legal right to return the idea that Israel's right to exist is the one we should be concerned about, and not Palestine's, is both ridiculous and, let's be honest, racist.
Been watching the cops investigate a shooting in my neighborhood for the last hour and have never felt this harder than I do right now. I bet if you guys keep walking around in circles in the street you'll crack the case.
🔥 @stavvybaby: “I don't wanna do both sides bullshit because it's not true. 1 side is worse, objectively — 1 side’s disappearing people, 1 wants children to have healthcare. I don't think that's equivalent. A lot of stand-ups have the dumbest opinions.”
AOC: I also find the freakout around it pretty funny as well. I’m not gonna lie. A commentator that was like, “What she’s doing is peddling the dangerous lie that women can have it all.” Can you believe that?
What I find funny is that my choice is a threat to them. Despite the rhetoric they use and the bald eagles that they plaster all over the place, they actually really do not believe in a free country.
You do not need anyone’s approval to lead your life and make the choices that make you happy.
They talk about being pro-family, but all of a sudden when a 36-year-old talks about having a baby, they’re mad. How many male members of Congress are they freaking out about having kids after 40? The president had his last kid at 59. Life happens.
And people say you’re peddling this dangerous lie that women can have it all. You know, maybe in life you can’t have everything, but here’s the secret: You can have a hell of a lot.
And I am very grateful for my life. I go after what I want, but maybe that’s what they don’t like either. Too bad for them.
One of AOC’s best qualities is that she doesn’t back off. Try to shame her and she will double down and make you look even more stupid. That is the only way to thrive in an environment like this. All Democrats need to learn this simple trick.
Fifty years ago, Title IX gave girls and women the right to play. Now MAGA wants it gone.
First they banned trans girls from school sports. Called it "protecting women." Then they came for college athletes. Now they're coming for the WNBA.
This was never about trans women in the W. That's the wedge. Title IX is the prize.
The Heritage Foundation called women's sports a "failed experiment," that we belong in yoga class, and at home raising kids.
The WNBA was built by Queer & Black women. We can’t let MAGA call our shots. Sign the petition to tell Cathy and the WNBA to hold the line.

Mega millionaires and billionaires are suing New York City over the pied-à-terre surcharge, which is a tax on the wealthiest New Yorkers who own second homes worth more than $5M. A tax that would fund programs for working people.
They are literally spending millions in legal fees so they don't have to pay slightly more in taxes on their SECOND HOMES THAT ARE WORTH MORE THAN $5M.
What happened to all the threats of leaving the city? Oh right, you were full of cyclosporiasis explosive diarrhea.
