USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner signed with Lyon last summer but never played or trained with the club. Instead, he moved on loan to New England Revolution less than two months later.
What happened? Turner explains 🗣️
“An opportunity for me to get out of Nottingham Forest presented itself to a club like Lyon. And I'm thinking this is a home run situation,” he said.
“I'm going to a place where I know a few of the players, like Tanner Tesman, Ainsley Maitland-Niles.”
“I'm going to a great city that people have said nothing but good things about. Passionate fans. So I’m thinking this is kind of a home run and good timing for the move.”
“I did my medical in Chicago. I was with the national team and I got everything all sorted and ready to go.”
“I was ready to turn the page and start a new journey and you know, when the news dropped that the club was going to be relegated financially on my birthday June 24th, I'm thinking, oh boy, here we go.”
“Like I didn’t really know what it meant but yeah, my agent kind of had a wind of it earlier.”
“So by the time the news dropped and everyone's kind of looking at me on the bus because you know, it came through as an ESPN alert. Everyone's looking at me like, dude, did you see this?”
“I'm like, yeah, I already kind of knew what's going on.”
“The last thing I ever intended to do was to put a club in a difficult situation financially, you know.”
“I'm looking at the bottom line and I'm like, this is a home run for me. They're not guaranteeing me anything, but it's another opportunity for me to get in a new environment and try to prove myself.”
“And they were selling their number one. So, it was all to play for in my mind. And so when it came out that my transfer was the one that would sort of put them over the threshold of what was financially allowed, we had to find a solution.”
“Because I didn't want that to be the case. If you are that person that puts that club in a position, you will, no matter what happens like you could play worldly every single week like they could have been in Ligue Two and you could have played every single game with clean sheet and get them back to Ligue One, you still wouldn't be able to make that up I feel like.”
Now back with his former club in MLS, Turner is getting regular playing time and is determined to make the World Cup squad.
