I think “__ works best when it has one foot in parable” can be said of most musicals. In fact, I can’t think of a musical that would benefit from the gritty dark knight “realism” that has infected our cinema.

kushner’s screenplay was a real give & take. WSS works best when it has one foot in parable; grounding it too much in the grit & grime of the real world throws it off balance. that additional material is also where mike/ ariana/david did some of their most astonishing work.
