🇮🇹 Lancia Delta S4 Prototype Testing
🇫🇮 Markku Alen Testing in this clip.
Project Genesis:
Development on the SE038 began in earnest around 1983–1984 to succeed the legendary rear-wheel-drive 037, as Lancia needed a four-wheel-drive contender to match the dominant Audi Sport Quattro and Peugeot 205 T16.
Chassis & Layout:
Unlike the production road car, which was a front-engine, front-wheel-drive hatchback, the Delta S4 was a bespoke, mid-engined space-frame machine covered in lightweight composite and fiberglass body panels designed to resemble the everyday Delta.
Twin-Charging Innovation:
The prototype showcased Lancia's groundbreaking twin-charging system—pairing an Volumex roots-type supercharger for instant low-end throttle response with a large KKK turbocharger that took over at higher RPMs. This eliminated turbo lag and provided immense power across the rev range.
Testing Phase:
Early prototype testing took place in secret across rough gravel tracks in Italy and snow-covered passes in the Alps.
Drivers like Markku Alén and Henri Toivonen and others put early mules through rigorous endurance and handling evaluations, battling traction and cooling challenges inherent in shoving a high-boost twin-charged engine into a compact silhouette.
The prototype eventually evolved into the race-ready Group B car that debuted and won on its very first outing at the 1985 RAC Rally.

AT AUCTION: 🏷️ Presented by Artcurial at the 'The Renault Icons' auction near Paris on 7 December 2025, this 1983 Maxi 5 Turbo Development Prototype B0.
A 1983 Renault Maxi 5 Turbo Development Prototype linked to Jean Ragnotti is due to cross the block on 7 December 2025 at the Renault Icons sale in Flins-sur-Seine, with an estimate of €80,000–120,000.
The unregistered prototype, transferred to Renault Heritage in 1990 as “Maquette 3”, carries no identification plates but shows evidence of previous use, including 7,000km on the odometer and drill holes for former ID tags. The car retains period competition components and is described as a substantial restoration candidate.
Comparison with three Maxi cars held by Renault’s museum suggests the chassis originated as a Tour de Corse shell later adapted to near-Maxi specification. Investigators noted Tour de Corse traits such as turbocharger placement, firewall layout, steering and a Ruby roll cage, rather than the Matter design used on all Maxis. The rear strut brace configuration also aligned with early Tour de Corse models.
The prototype nonetheless features several Maxi-specific elements, including evidence of a complete Maxi engine installation, water-injection hardware, twin oil coolers, Maxi-type rear suspension and front strut bracing, as well as aluminium body panels and characteristic Maxi bodywork. Front hub carriers differ from production Tour de Corse castings and appear to reflect development intentions for a four-wheel drive programme.
According to Renault engineers cited in the documentation, the car corresponds to the B0 prototype created in 1983 during work on a proposed four-wheel drive R5 Turbo derivative, known internally as the NG project. Early tests were conducted with Ragnotti at Malaucène and Le Luc using a 1397cc engine fitted with technologies drawn from Renault’s Formula One programme. As plans shifted to a two-wheel drive model that would become the Maxi, the prototype evolved with updated chassis and engine components.
The B0 car, originally white, was stored after the introduction of the yellow-and-black Maxi prototype in 1984 and later repainted in Philips colours before delivery to Renault Heritage. The auction house states that the vehicle “was set up by Jean Ragnotti” and represents a key step in the transition from the Tour de Corse (20 cars produced) to the Maxi (10 cars).
The prototype is offered without an engine or fuel tanks but includes rare period parts, a multi-point roll cage, competition wiring loom, hydraulic handbrake and brake-bias adjuster. Four works brake callipers accompany the lot. The seller describes it as a significant link in the development lineage of the R5 Turbo and a candidate for comprehensive mechanical recommissioning.
Estimated at €80,000 – €120,000.
