@earthFgardener Remove 8 out of 10 plastic-lined, double-dug imported saplings. Not any self-planted natural trees, planted by jays, squirrels and the wind.

@earthFgardener 17.10 acres of recently planted woodland sounds like a tree factory destined to fail in a few decades. Probably need to rip out 8 out of 10 trees, nurture the remaining, and let the land naturalise into a forest. The rest could become protective scrubland as a first step.

Yesterday I took a B3 tablet a little while before going out to the village centre. People I spoke to paid me extra, entranced attention. Must try it again.

Need to find out how to keep bats alive - i have been watering the trees and grass, but perhaps there aren't enough insects for them. Garden is full of (mainly cabbage white) butterflies and wild bees and is chemical free.

I found a dead bat, North West Germany. Are there any bat-appreciators out there who can identify it? It is tiny, about 4cm in body. It will receive a funeral with flowers today.

It is excessively dry here, the early summer rains are long gone. May was very wet, “Mai kühl und nass . . .” June brought but futile showers and was generally dry and now July is very dry. The stream beds are dry with encroaching grass.

In mehreren italienischen Städten werden öffentliche Sitzbänke inzwischen so umgestaltet, dass sich unter ihnen kleine geschützte Plätze für Straßenkatzen befinden. Dort finden die Tiere Schutz vor Kälte, Regen und anderen Gefahren, ohne aus der Umgebung verdrängt zu werden, die sie kennen und in der sie sich orientieren.
Diese kleinen Rückzugsorte sind oft mit weichen Unterlagen und Futternäpfen ausgestattet, sodass ausgesetzte oder herrenlose Katzen einen sicheren Platz zum Ausruhen bekommen. Gerade für Tiere, die tagtäglich draußen überleben müssen, kann so ein einfacher Unterschlupf einen großen Unterschied machen.
Das Besondere an diesem Projekt ist, dass es zeigt, wie gut Stadtgestaltung und Mitgefühl zusammenpassen können. Mit kleinen, durchdachten Veränderungen werden gewöhnliche öffentliche Plätze plötzlich zu wertvollen Schutzräumen für Tiere, die sonst oft übersehen werden.
Manchmal braucht es keine großen Bauprojekte, um Leben zu verbessern. Manchmal reicht eine einfache Bank – und die Idee, dass unter ihr nicht nur Menschen, sondern auch Tiere ein wenig Sicherheit finden können.
