Dear HM Government, (UK)
Firstly, congratulations. You’ve managed to discover a brand-new definition of transparency.
Apparently, the people who write the laws can have their criminal records kept secret from the very people expected to obey those laws. That’s an impressive piece of political gymnastics.
The rest of us apply for jobs, volunteer roles, taxi licences, security passes, and all manner of positions where background checks are considered perfectly reasonable. Yet when it comes to those entrusted with running the country… suddenly privacy becomes the highest constitutional principle.
Forgive us if we’re a little confused.
If a criminal record is irrelevant to holding public office, then explain why. If it is relevant, then surely voters deserve to know before they hand over power at the ballot box.
Democracy relies on informed consent. It’s difficult to make an informed choice if important information about elected representatives is deliberately withheld.
This isn’t about conducting witch hunts or judging people for minor mistakes made decades ago. It’s about accountability. Those who expect the public’s trust should be prepared to earn it through openness, not secrecy.
Unlike the government’s pursuit of Veterans 🤔
So, a simple question:
Why should MPs and ministers be held to a lower standard of transparency than many ordinary citizens applying for everyday jobs?
After all, “nothing to hide” seems to apply enthusiastically to taxpayers, but rather less enthusiastically to taxpayers’ employees.
Is transparency now something that’s only expected of the governed, while the governors are exempt?
Abit like the COVID vaccine 🤔 there is a pattern,
Perhaps we’ve misunderstood how equality works. We foolishly assumed the same standards applied to everyone. It would appear they do… right up until someone becomes an MP.
The British public doesn’t expect perfection.
We do, however, expect honesty, accountability, and the same standards from those who make our laws as they expect from those who obey them.
Yours, slightly bewildered,
A Taxpayer 🇬🇧
Hi @Vodacom - I am struggling with TOBI and need support. Could you please contact me or send me an email address where I can reach you regarding an expired SIM I need to reactivate please
IT'S OFFICIAL: There was no "£20billion black hole".
It was a lie.
Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer repeated this lie in the Commons, at PMQs, to the press, the markets, and directly to the British public.
To say this is *incredibly serious* would be an understatement.
So, as we ALL knew, THERE NEVER WAS A BLACK HOLE! and the actually had 4.2 Billion pound surplace! @RachelReevesMP "misled the public, the press and the market".
She HAS to RESIGN!!
@SmythsToysUK please stop using @DHLGlobal they are useless & dishonest. I waiting for a delivery between 11am and 1pm yesterday - no show. They claim the driver couldn’t get access. I have 3 CCTV cameras including a ring doorbell. I received a washing machine and Amazon orders
LFG cleaned graffiti off the tube.
TfL smeared us as criminals.
They claimed they had evidence. But we discovered the secret emails that prove they never had evidence.
Lying is bad. Say sorry, Andy.
@British_Airways how do I get in touch with you regarding a luggage issue that you arranged to have repaired via K2Global please. I would like to speak with a real person rather than completing more forms online please.
@OctopusEnergy please advise which is the tariff I require if I have solar and battery - no Electric Vehicle.
In autumn I generate enough when it’s not overcast to power the house mostly, but not enough to charge the battery. I would like to charge the battery off peak.
@British_Airways My wife and twins recently flew from LHR to JNB. They took one car seat with them because we were physically unable to get all the luggage to the airport by tube.
I’m flying to JNB solo this week. Can I take a child car seat above my luggage allowance please?
@British_Airways There was never any catering planned. However today, having been picked up at 11:45 am, you had the flight scheduled for 15:00, it’s now 17:15, so there was opportunity to cater for all the families that have been delayed for 42 hours already. Now we have a 5 hour flight ahead…
Shambolic @British_Airways
We’re now on our 3rd ‘departure’ since Saturday night failed, Sunday night (or should I say Monday morning) failed, now Monday evening, sat on the plane for over an hour been ferried by you to the airport at 11:45 this morning - and you have no food?!
