Daughter is 7 weeks old- she had life saving surgery day 1 of life. I spent 2 weeks standing over her bassinet in the NICU, crying in the middle of the night, asking God why this was happening to my daughter and begging for strength to persevere while working 7 days a week in the middle of the NFL season. Wife and I haven’t slept more than 4 hrs/night since Nov. Last night, while holding her at 2 am, she briefly stopped screaming and made eye contact with me and smiled for the first time. No amount of success/money/fame/worldly reward has even sniffed the amount of purpose and fulfillment that single moment brought me.

If Joe Smith was a 5th rd draft pick who entered training camp 4th string and the regular season third string…

He was elevated to second string when the rookie QB in front of him became the starter. A month later he played in the second half of a game when the starter went out

Do you think anything about whether he got first string practice reps would be discussed? Of course it wouldn’t.

It’s just mind numbing this is actually a story at all.

I think there is a massive misunderstanding about how an NFL practice is structured.

The only time mid round pick rookies and backups get meaningful reps is in training camp, and they are never with the ones unless you are competing or starting that next preseason game.

Regular season practices have 10-12 plays per period.. that’s team run, team pass, team blitz pickup, and some teams still do a 7v7 period…
But for the most part that’s are 30-40 live full speed reps of the actual gameplan practiced on Wed, Thursday and Friday in the NFL.. these all go to the starting QB.. he’s the one that has to be to get ready. And if healthy he gets to make that call.

These team periods alternate between O and D with backups and PS players and even some guys that will play significant roles on Sunday, serving as scout team “look” squads for those periods.

This is where we backups get our reps.
You have to try and translate what the scout team play is into your offense and play it accordingly.
Honestly this is a lot of times more beneficial to you as a QB because you’re getting reps against a full defense of starters at full speed, the minus being that it’s not necessarily your offensive plays your running.

Folks don’t understand, it’s incredibly difficult, probably the hardest job in all of sports!!! to be a backup QB, for this very reason. Because of limited to no reps and same expectations..
And that is you must come in and perform at the same level as the guy you replaced for your teammates, coaches and your own career security.

You come in and struggle an you’re evaluated of that performance, right or wrong, the league makes it’s judgements about you, that’s why it’s so hard for backups to have long careers that weren’t at one point full time starters (nod to guys like myself & my buddies @ChaseDaniel and @danorlovsky7 )

Yes it stinks that that’s the situation SS came into. I’ve been there, LITERALLY, with the Browns, as a rookie, as a mid round pick. So have many other rookies.. you play, you learn and grow and get better.. or you don’t.

Absolutely reps help, Absolutely he’ll be better with a full week of prep.

But those are the hands as backups we’re dealt, and in those moments and we have to make the most of them.

SS will be better with reps for sure. But if DG remains the guy the facts of life in an NFL practice still remains for us backups..

This dot is 6,000 square miles, which falls short of the usual figure of 10,000 square miles of solar panels to power the US.

10,000 square miles is two Greater Los Angeles areas, all the way from Thousand Oaks to San Clemente, from Moreno Valley to the ocean.

A very large number does not magically become a small number when you pull an even bigger number out of your ass to compare it to.

Now you wanna cover that area in solar panels, and keep them all maintained, cleaned, and facing the sun?

Then you wanna make enough batteries to charge up and meet the ENTIRE POWER DEMANDS OF THE UNITED STATES over the course of a winter night?

Is this impossible?

No. Very few things are impossible. But what would it cost, and is it the lowest cost option?

Well, allow me to introduce you to the concept of a Radiothermal Steam Generator.

Let's suppose, purely for the purpose of argument, that there are some magic rocks that get hot all by themselves. In fact, if you refine them and put a whole bunch of them together, they get really hot.

If these magic rocks existed, then it would be relatively simple to gather a bunch of them together, boil some water, and make electricity with a great big steam engine running off the boiling water.

Best of all, you could run them all night, so you wouldn't need 25 trillion dollars worth of batteries. Plus more to support growing power demands.

And you wouldn't have to clean and maintain 438 Manhattan Islands' worth of solar panels.

(See? I can make a big number look even bigger by comparing it to a small number! See how this trick is played?)

Sure, you would have to throw away the rocks after they wore out and didn't get hot anymore. But they wouldn't occupy any more volume than they did when you were using them. So you could store them right there in big concrete block, no problem.

But there are two problems with Radiothermal Steam Generation.

First of all, boomers are scared of magic rocks, so they pass a whole bunch of laws to make them feel safe, to the point where any use of magic rocks costs two extra dollars in regulatory compliance for every one dollar in actual cost.

Secondly, magic rocks are clearly made up and don't exist. Otherwise we would have known about them since the early 20th century, and cheap, zero-carbon energy would be a totally solved problem.

Since this hasn't happened, magic rocks must not exist, because if they did, what civilization would be so stupid as to not use them?
