@Gilesyb Interesting points. There is a link between industrial strategy caprice and Brexit: earlier iterations were based on premise of participating in int’l value chains, betting on niche strengths. That needed rethink for less open economy, but was also recipe for inertia.

This data - reflected across Europe - shows consequences of austerity crystallising just as a historic era of cheap borrowing ends. Working on spending plans in 2011 I saw many ‘spend to save’ proposals laughed out of the room by finance ministry officials.
Eyes now on the Council after Commission recommends EU candidate status for Moldova and Ukraine. Politically harder for member states to block or delay now that Georgia verdict delayed to end of 2022. But it only takes one to veto.
Our opinions on the membership applications of 🇺🇦🇲🇩🇬🇪 were carefully assessed based on their merits, as we have always done in the past.
This is a solid basis to move forward together.

We have agreed with 🇺🇸 to pause our steel & aluminium (232) trade dispute and launch cooperation on a Global Arrangement on Sustainable Steel & Aluminium.
Our agreement will be announced by @vonderleyen and @POTUS tomorrow.
