digital twins of lost civilizations fascinate me

hearing about PhD students discovering previously unknown cities in old aerial LiDAR collections from Mexico really makes you wonder - how much more would we learn about our own history if we had a true 1:1 3D model of the world?

alas, right now it's a patchwork. islands of high fidelity stitched together with coarser maps of everything else. and that's just land - the oceans of course are an even deeper mystery
