🇺🇸 Bretagne was the last search dog from the WTC still known alive. On June 6, 2016, she walked in to the Fairfield Animal Hospital in Cypress, Texas on her own. She was 16 years old and had kidney failure.

Firefighters from Cy-Fair and Texas Task Force 1 lined the sidewalk in dress uniform. They saluted as she passed. Her handler, Denise Corliss, had slept on the floor beside her the night before.

Thirty minutes later the line formed again. Black bands on the badges this time. Bretagne came out in a casket covered with a Texas flag, carried by Texas Task Force 1.

Bretagne didn’t just work at the WTC. After that came Katrina. Rita. Ivan. Then she retired and became something quieter. A reading dog for first-graders. The shy ones would only read out loud if she was in the room. She would put her head in their laps the same way she had done for the men who had gone silent at the World Trade Center.
