The consequences reach far beyond the baptismal font. The church cannot simply correspond to the population of a territory; natural birth cannot determine its boundaries; the ordinances cannot function as rites of incorporation into a sacral society; and the magistrate cannot police membership in Christ’s kingdom. A gathered church, believer’s baptism, congregational responsibility, church discipline, and liberty of conscience belong together within a coherent theological vision.

This reframes the familiar historical objection. Baptists are often treated as an anomaly because recognizably Baptist churches emerged comparatively late against centuries of infant baptism and Christendom. However, chronology cannot determine normativity. The Reformation itself rests upon the conviction that antiquity and consensus, however weighty as historical witnesses, remain subordinate to the Word of God.

The Baptist claim is not that the church vanished for fifteen centuries and suddenly reappeared among Baptists, nor that everything associated with Christendom was corrupt. It is simply that no amount of historical normality can make normative what Scripture does not establish. If inherited patterns of church membership, sacramental practice, or civil-religious identity cannot be sustained from the apostolic witness, their antiquity cannot place them beyond reform.

The question, then, is not merely, “When did Christians become Baptists?” It is first, “What did Christ establish His church to be?” Only then can we determine whether Baptists are the anomaly to Christian history, or whether, at crucial points, Christian history had become the anomaly to Scripture.

As Christa Pike, a woman who tortured a girl to death and took a piece of her victim’s skull as a trophy, receives life saving medical treatment following a botched execution, keep something in mind: many states in this country will not give medical treatment to a baby who survives abortion. In fact several states have specifically repealed laws requiring treatment for infants born alive after an abortion. And every single mainstream Democrat in the country opposes any law to protect infants who survive abortions. So this condemned murderer, who earned her execution through her own choices, is getting more humane treatment than infant children who were given a death sentence through no fault of their own. And every Democrat — every single one, no exceptions — empathizes far more with this murderer than with those babies.
