PM Shri @narendramodi ji gave the clarion call for a new Gharial Conservation Project at the 7th Meeting of the National Board for Wildlife to take the unique long-snouted Gharial crocodile found only in the Indian subcontinent from its current status of being in the "Critically Endangered category" to one with a thriving population.
On this #WorldCrocodileDay, it is important to let the world know that India has brought back 3 species of Crocodilians, namely Gharial, Mugger and SaltWater Crocodile, from the brink of extinction through concentrated efforts of wildlife managers and scientists under a globally acclaimed initiative.
The PM Modi led government has envisioned to give impetus to Gharial conservation in its historical distribution river system by both in situ and ex situ conservation. The Gharial conservation also leads to conservation of aquatic ecosystem and river rejuvenation.
I urge all citizens of India to participate in this movement.
Few years back it was a dream to sight tigers in Similipal but now tourists are sighting very frequently and clicking beautiful photos. This revival is a result of hard work and sacrifice made by our team. Proud of my team Similipal.
