It's great to have Killarney National Park in the news. It matters more than most places because it is of such high biodiversity value and is entirely in the hands of the state. Here is a short 🧵 after spending some time there and meeting NPWS staff...
@IrishRainforest 2. In spring 21, the Minister reached out to us to arrange a meeting based on our previous contact.
We were asked to submit the agenda to the meeting. This is where his officials stepped in and refused our agenda.
Essentially don't talk about the past.
@IrishRainforest@noonan_malcolm@IrishTimes Why has NPWS been so secretive about sharing their "new data-led, strategic rhododendron removal programme under way there"?
We have an AIE request under appeal with OCEI since 2022 to obtain such information, NPWS has refused to share.
Minister @noonan_malcolm wrote in Saturday's @IrishTimes of "efforts to manage deer in a targeted, evidence-based way" in Killarney.
So why have MORE of Ireland's SOLE herd of native red deer been shot than alien invasive sika?
Why have NONE of the invasive goats been culled?🧵
Walking around it always strikes me that the best way to start a real recovery of native woodlands is to allow the pockets which remain to expand naturally.
Presently these are often actively suppressed whilst we pay for woodland creation elsewhere
I made a short video about it
@IrishRainforest@Groundwork9 Sick and disgusted and very very angry Eoghan. No recognition of work done, no respect for the volunteers or for science and no acknowledgement of the management failures that have undone 30 years of highly successful rhododendron management
A few pictures from our 1988 workcamps in #Killarney NP. We've put the remainder on our FB page along with a few from 1985.
No matter what year you volunteered, these pictures should bring back special memories of your time in the woods.

A few pictures from the archives... Groundwork workcamps 1981 in #Killarney National Park.
We are going to start posting our old pictures here and on Facebook.
Well, we won't be collecting Elm seed from this monster.
One of the biggest, healthiest elms around- the only thing wrong with it was to be in the care of a local council.
Levitstown/Maganey stretch along the #Barrow.
As much as I love the nature found on this stretch, this time if year fills me with dread.
Waterways Ireland will soon start to obliterate the hedges & riverside, removing food and shelter.
All they need to do is cut the grass...
@think_or_swim@ClaireByrneLive Hi John, not all greenways are equal. Old railway lines are not fields/ permeable canal tracks.
There are real environmental concerns. The amount of aggregate that's needed, habitat fragmentation from the wire fencing, etc.
Compulsory purchase is not a way to get local support.
