三重大学の橋詰良太郎博士のチームが開発したのは「アレル特異的編集」技術。

ダウン症の原因は「21番染色体が1本多い」こと。

その余分な染色体を、CRISPRで丸ごと削除することに成功。

3本ある染色体のうち、余分な1本だけをピンポイントで狙い撃ちする。健康な2本には触れない。

余分な染色体が消えた細胞は炎症や代謝に関わる過剰な遺伝子が静まり、脳の発達に関わる遺伝子が活性化し、細胞の分裂速度も正常化した。

ダウン症は700人に1人の割合で生まれる。これまでの治療は「症状の管理」だけだった。

原因そのものに手をつけたのは、これが世界で初めて。

The key to saving the environment is not looking backward, it’s moving forward.

I realized this the first time I visited Italy twenty years ago. Everything was clean and green. The rivers sparkled. The lesson for me was obvious: the answer is not underdevelopment. The answer is progress.

When China was poor, the air was so polluted that people could barely see the blue sky. Today, blue skies have returned to their cities. Development does not only create wealth, it also provides the resources needed to restore and protect the environment.

Some environmentalists want us to preserve every aspect of our biodiversity, including the mosquitoes for example, so that researchers can fly in once every ten years from their universities (which build particle accelerators and billion-dollar laboratories with their pocket money), study our ecosystems, and count how many people died from dengue outbreaks.

They want to buy our air through carbon credits. If carbon credits were such a great deal, they would be selling them to us, not the other way around.

Cleaning every river, lake, and water source in El Salvador, and ensuring they remain clean and sparkling, would cost roughly $12 billion. Where is that money supposed to come from without economic development? Carbon credits?

The path forward for our country is the path of Japan and Singapore, not the path of the Congo.

A senior software engineer in Amsterdam built the open source replacement as a side project. He put it on GitHub for free. It has 10,569 stars.

His name is David Stotijn. The software is Hetty.

Here is what Hetty is.

An HTTP toolkit for security research. A machine-in-the-middle proxy that sits between your browser and the target. Every request and every response flows through Hetty. You can read them, search them, intercept them, edit them, replay them, and send them again.

This is the core loop of every web application security test ever performed. Burp Suite charges 475 dollars a year for it. Hetty does the same job for zero.

Here is the feature set.

A machine-in-the-middle HTTP proxy with full logs and advanced search. An HTTP client for manually creating and editing requests, and replaying any request you already proxied. Request and response interception for manual review, with full edit, send, receive, and cancel control. Scope support to keep your work organized to a single target. Or they download a 30 MB Go binary written by a freelancer in Amsterdam and keep every dollar they earn.

David has not pushed a new commit in 16 months. The last commit was January 13, 2025. That is normal for a tool that is feature-complete. HTTP has not changed. The proxy still proxies. The intercept still intercepts. MIT licensed code does not expire when the maintainer takes a break.

Buy a domain. Find a bug. Cash a bounty.

PortSwigger took a free industry tool and put it behind a 475 dollar paywall. A freelancer in Amsterdam gave it back. On every platform. For zero dollars.
