MAGA world launched a bizarre oppo dump on me overnight on Twitter, focusing mostly on my mental health struggles. Let’s be clear: I couldn't care less about what right-wing trolls on the internet say about me. I don’t care if they talk about my mental health, my weight, or my work. What I do care about is the culture they promote—the culture that makes it harder for those who are struggling to get the help they need.

The truth is, I ignored my anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts for nearly 20 years. It almost killed me. I wasn’t able to ask for help, let alone accept it. I believed that admitting something was wrong meant I was weak. I felt like I was failing everyone in my life. I now know real strength comes from vulnerability and empathy instead.

People should feel safe and secure in reaching out to friends, family, and their community, saying, “I need help. Something’s wrong. I need to talk to someone.” But when powerful people on this website, personally amplified in our general feeds by billionaires like Elon Musk, use this platform to tear people down for speaking about their struggles, it only makes it harder for others to come forward.

There are people who aren’t here today because they lost their battle with things like suicidal ideation, alcoholism, drug addiction, and more. They might be here if they had received the help they needed if others had been more compassionate and empathetic. They might be here if a permission structure was created that made it easier for them to get help. That’s why we see so many deaths of despair in this country.

Not only is MAGA world coming after me for my mental health and my willingness to discuss it, but they also prey on people—especially white men—who are in similar situations. They exploit those struggling with anxiety, depression, imposter syndrome, suicidal thoughts, and addictions. They offer a perceived community based on grievance, misinformation, and lies, giving these people something to believe in and commit themselves to.

Honestly, I feel sorry for these people. I really do. The ones sending me hateful tweets, slurs, and attacks on my weight and mental health—I pity them. They’re living lives of sadness and anger, and I don’t believe they were born that way. I think they were sucked into this whirlpool by right-wing media. I feel for them, and I hope they can eventually see that the content they’re consuming, the things that they’re saying, and the world they’ve been pulled into are exploiting them to empower people who don’t care about them.

I hope they can break free and start seeing the world with more empathy and compassion. It’s, again, a big part of the conversation we’ve been leading at #WhiteDudesforHarris this month. It’s important.

In the meantime, they can keep on sending nasty comments. I’m going to keep on being a joyful warrior. Thank you.
