Time for a general update🧵on what's going on in Shanghai. This will probably be my last one, since my personal situation has largely stabilized and I don't have personal experience from the rest of the city to try to tell you what's going on.

P.S. the takeaway ofc is that SH local gov needs to get their shit together and transport the positive cases to reasonably functional, equipped, and livable quarantine facilities, if that wasn’t clear. The solution isn’t “let’s just give up.”

I’ve heard similar things fm relatives & friends who’re volunteers.

I’m no public health expert and I could be wrong, but I think until SH local gov can effectively & timely relocate positive individuals, blanket Covid tests are counterproductive. 1/2

1. The risk of exposure is clear and present
2. It’s a huge waste of human resources and volunteer bandwidth/goodwill, which all are already running low

@mattwaters86 I think the problem is with the execution rather than with the policy. The problem with Shanghai is that it’s taking too long to move the positive cases. If you look at the successful examples of other cities that’s clear. No doubt that SH missed the best window long ago.

The key concept to understanding China’s zero Covid policy is “positive responsibility”, a term that came out of my discussion w/ a friend.

It essentially boils down to anyone who’s Covid positive must proactively prevent from spreading the infection to others. 1/

Kind of stupefying how hate for 0 Covid is warping story about how Shanghai ended up in lockdown. It’s not dogmatic adherence to 0 Covid that led Shanghai to current predicament, but attempt to *leave* 0 Covid, go with a lighter disease control strategy that put them in lockdown.

@Hooberland_ @DanielBrownlie3 Show me where in the blog post that they say with the same outbreak, the gdp will be less impacted had there been no lockdown measures. Show me the modeling of the spread of omicron without lockdown. Yea, outbreaks+lockdown tend to hurt economy, that was never the issue.

@Hooberland_ @DanielBrownlie3 The same goes for econ impacts. The comparison should be between during an outbreak of this scale, long term impact of lockdown vs no lockdown. Sorry but blog posts without peer review just doesn’t cut it. But if you just want to be passive aggressive then we don’t need to go on

The question is would the same ppl get care if there is an outbreak of this scale with no lockdown measures, AKA will there be resource for them when there’re 1M+ Covid cases citywide.

@Hooberland_ @DanielBrownlie3 Never claimed to be an expert. If you think macro economic performance isn’t relevant long term to lockdown impact, please enlighten us as to why. I’m not sure how nuanced the “analysis” you shared can be since the situation it’s commenting on is clearly still developing.
