Kyle Dake first defeated Zahid Valencia in the 2018 Final X best-of-three series at 79 kg by scores of 4-0 and 4-3. Dake went on to capture one of his four World titles that year, outscoring his opponents at the World Championships by a combined score of 37-0. Zahid would later earn a World bronze medal in 2023 at 92 kg.

Last year, Dake made the jump all the way from 74 kg to 86 kg, bypassing 79 kg entirely. Zahid defeated Dake 8-4 in the finals of the 2025 U.S. Open and followed it up with two more wins, 5-3 and 4-1, at Final X. Like Dake did in 2018, Zahid went on to win a World title at the weight without surrendering a single point, outscoring the field 49-0.

Fast forward to 2026, and the 35-year-old Dake turned the tables, defeating Zahid in the Final X best-of-three series by scores of 3-2, 6-3, and 5-1. In the opening match, Dake was leading in the closing seconds before a reversed call swung the result, putting him in a 1-0 series hole.

Many counted him out. I picked Dake to win this matchup, and while I may have been on an island, this warrior made me look fairly smart.
